Bunker Boys Golf report for the week commencing Monday July 28th

Monday, July 28th

Eastern Star

1st Frank Dartford (26) 36 points

2nd Paul Elliott (10) 34 points

3rd Robbie Watts (14) 30 points

Near pin Gary King, Paul Elliott, Bil Richardson, & Vivienne Laverty

It’s never too late, just recently a gentleman one day after his ninety-first birthday got his first ever hole in one, how good must that have felt? It goes to show while there is life there is hope. Those of advanced years who have not had a hole in one yet, don’t give up, it could be in your next round.

An influx of new players today with a group staying just up the road at Chaba Hut joining for the first time. One thought they might have been put off by the morning rain, however six out of the eight fronted up.

Several complaints today in regard to Eastern Star which was surprisingly not in very good shape, in particular the greens were very substandard, they had a type of black fungus on them and were what is usually referred to as lost greens.

Frank Dartford is becoming a regular in the winners circle and took pride of place at the top of the winners list with a solid thirty-six points, we can now expect to see his handicap drop down to a more respectable level. Newcomer from Oz Paul Elliott took second place with thirty-four points while Robbie Watts took third but didn’t add to his golfer of the month tally so it’s all to play for on Wednesday at the Navy course. Near pins were as listed.

Wednesday, July 30th

Plutaluang N & W

1st Greg Berry (14) 36 points

2nd Robbie Watts (14) 35 points

3rd Gerry Cooney (20) 31 points

Near pins. Robbie Watts, Craig Dows, Billy Shepley, & Steve Downes

The last game of the month was played at Plutaluang on the North & West nines. The course was in decent condition apart from the greens on the North nine which were ridiculously slow, nobody can ever remember greens being that slow.

The order of play had to be changed at the last minute as two players who went directly to the course turned up late.

Playing his first game at the Bunker for quite some time Greg Berry took first place with a solid thirty-six points, one ahead of Robbie Watts in second with the evergreen Gerry Coney taking third with thirty-one points. There is never a game where Steve Downes doesn’t appear on the winners list and the trend continued today where he got his customary near pin, the other near pins went to Robbie Watts, Craig Dows, & Billy Shepley.

Coming into today’s game Robbie Watts held a slender one-point lead over Steve Downes in the golfer of the month race and extended that lead to win comfortably in the end, Steve had one of his poorer rounds and failed to fire when it counted most.

Last game for the time being for Tony Robbins who is down under bound for another of his many trips there every year.

Friday, August 1st

Khao Kheow A & B.

1st Greg Berry (14) 32 points

2nd Alan Sullivan (14) 30 points

3rd Gerry Cooney (20) 30 points

Near pins. Alan Sullivan,Dean Nelson, & Greg Berry.

“When you are hot you are hot”, although it might be a bit of a stretch to describe thirty-two points as a hot round, nevertheless it was enough to put Greg Berry into first place for the second time this week, a case of deja vu all over again. Alan Sullivan squeezed past Gerry Cooney on countback for second place, both with thirty, clearly not a day for high scoring. Not surprising that only three of the near pins were taken with A3 and B3 both quite long and difficult, the winners are as listed. Having written on Wednesday that Steve Downes never fails to appear on the winners list, well I must have put the mockers on him as today he didn’t find himself anywhere on the winners list.

Today’s course Khao Kheow was in superb condition with well grassed fairways and even paced greens, made for good scoring, one wonders why our group did not take advantage?

We still have a number of regulars missing, Jimmy Carr recovering from back surgery, Michael Brett in never ending physio with a rotator cuff tear, and Geoff Parker seemingly retired. Both our German members are due to return shortly so we should see bigger numbers coming through

Winner at Eastern Star Frank Dartford.

July Golfer of the Month, Robbie Watts.

Winner at Plutaluang and Khao Kheow, Greg Berry.
