Bunker Boys Golf report for the week commencing Monday April 21st

Monday April 21st

Khao Kheow A & B.

1st Michael Brett (14) 37 points

2nd Alan Sullivan (15) 33 points

3rd Jimmy Carr (22) 31 points

4th Mick McMahon (12) 31 points

Near pins Murray Greig, Hubert Stiefenhofer, & Alan Sullivan X 2.

A very lucky day for the Bunker Boys today at Khao Kheow where at any minute it looked like a downpour was about to happen, luckily we stayed dry. On the way back to Pattaya we saw what might have been with flooding on frontage rd prior to the entrance to hwy seven.

The course was virtually empty so we had a relaxed round, for most at least, there were a few incidents along the way best kept secret, suffice to say we may need a supply of valium sandwiches for future games if certain people play.

The course was good again apart from the greens, many felt they were on the slow side. The wind which probably kept the rain away proved a challenge for some.

Scoring was modest at best with only the winner, Michael Brett posting a decent score helped by a four point birdie on B 9, chipping in from about seventy yards out, it’s been said many times “you need a few things to go your way to win” this was such an occasion. Alan Sullivan took second place with thirty-three to go with his two near pins. Jimmy Carr edged out Mick McMahon on countback for third. Murray Greig got a near pin as did Hubert Stiefenhofer on B 8, as far from the hole as it was possible to be and still be on the green.

Well into April Uwe Jurgensen holds a commanding lead in the race for golfer of the month, can anybody run him down?

The Bunker Boys are now officially a bunch of crocks, last weeks trip to Kanchanaburi saw one player not even leave Pattaya because of a back complaint, another made it to the venue but did not play a single game due to a groin strain and yet another cried off half way through the trip, people are falling apart at an alarming rate.

Wednesday, April 23rd.

Pattavia, Medal

1st Michael Brett (14) Net 70

2nd Alan Sullivan (15) Net 73.

3rd Paul Smith (4) Net 74

Near pins, Colin Greig X 2, & Witt Mann X 2.

The second medal round of the month was played at Pattavia in stinking hot conditions. For the first time this year the fruit flies were out in swarms and as annoying as ever. Once again rain threatened and fell very close by, fortunately it stayed away until we were about to drive back to Pattaya.

It was most unusual today to find four no returns, sometimes it just happens that people forget it’s a medal round and  pick-up. A big variety in scores today from the high twenties to thirty-eight if counted as stableford. Back to back wins for Michael Brett with a net score of seventy. Alan Sullivan was three back in second with Paul Smith a further stroke back in third place. The near pins were shared between Witt Mann and Colin Greig, Witt had his name on three and managed to hang on to two, one by a whisker. We were about to change his name from Witt de Mann to Witt the near pin man.

Silky Oak

1st Mick McMahon (13) 39 points

2nd Steve Downes (6) 38 points

3rd Michael Brett (13) 34 points

Near pins Michael Brett, Hubert Stiefenhofer, Colin Greig, & Mick McMahon X 2.

The last game of the week was played at Silky Oak, a venue we haven’t been to since last low season. It could not be said that the course was in great condition, many fairways had bare patches on them and several greens had just been sanded, some with more than enough sand.

Another stinking hot day, luckily without fruit flies this time. Some serious storms raged in the distance with great flashes of lightning, luckily once again we managed to avoid it, sooner or later our luck has to run out, this is three times this week that we have been lucky.

For some reason Silky Oak is not popular with many so a small group today. Having threatened to post a score all week Mick McMahon delivered today with an excellent round of thirty-nine points. Steve Downes hasn’t been living up to his normal standard lately, however today he bounced back into form  to take second place with thirty-eight, a score that could have been much better. Michael Brett took third with thirty-four on a day when the golfing gods were a bit unkind to him unlike earlier in the week when they smiled on him. Near pins were as listed.

Michael Brett, winner at Khao Kheow & Pattavia.

Mick McMahon, winner at Silky Oak.
