Bunker Boys Golf Report for the week commencing Monday, October 20th

Monday, October 20th

Greenwood C & A

1st Mike Milland (17) 35 points

2nd Paul Smith (5) 34 points

3rd Neil Jones (24) 32 points

4th Ian Flannigan (19) 31 points

Near pins Mike Milland & Paul Smith.

As expected, a much better turnout for today’s game at Greenwood where we were allocated the C & A nines. The course was in excellent condition given recent rain, in fact it was so dry that carts were allowed on the fairways. We arrived to find a virtually empty car park, most unexpected.

It was remarkable to see such a quality course so quiet at this time of year especially as the all-in fee was only fourteen hundred baht, great value by any measure. The lead group literally flew around the course, back in the clubhouse in under three hours and fifteen minutes, if only we could keep up that pace every game.

It is hard to fathom why scores were so low all things considered, perhaps the lack of run on the fairways was a contributing factor.

In his first game back this season Mike Milland sounded a warning to all that he is here to play, taking first place with thirty-five points. Also in his first game back, Paul Smith took second place one adrift.. A real curate’s egg from third placed Neil Jones with some excellent stroke play interspersed with some not so good, third place with thirty-two points was his reward. Donald Trump’s greatest supporter, all the way from Scotland, Ian Flannigan brought up the rear with thirty-one points.

Given such a large group it was both surprising and disappointing to see that only two near pins were taken, going to Mike Milland and Paul Smith.

Wednesday, October 22nd

Crystal Bay C & A

1st Alan Sullivan (16) 34 points

2nd Tony Robbins (29) 33 points

3rd Michael Brett (17) 31 points

Near pins Ian Flannigan, Mark Williams, & John Webb X 2.

A near perfect day for golf at Crystal Bay today, the course was in its best condition, although the greens were remarkably slow. The weather was pleasant with no threat of rain even with the wind blowing moderately.

Another sprint  for the lead group again, in, within three and a half yours. The second group lost at least four holes on them. This was yet another course that was very quiet.

Scoring was on the low side for Crystal Bay with only Alan Sullivan and Tony Robbins reaching some kind of respectable score. Good to see all the near pins were taken with John Webb taking two, and one each to Ian Flannigan and Mark Williams.

On debut with the Bunker Boys Mark Williams had a very slow start only to string together a run of pars mid round before fading away again, someone to keep an eye on for the future.

Treasure Hill

Medal

1st Robby Watts (12) Net 73

2nd Michael Brett (17) Net 74

3rd Kevin LaBar (16) Net 75

4th Jimmy Carr (22) Net 77

Near pins, Les Cobban,Colin Greig, Robby Watts, & Uwe Jurgensen

One has to wonder why we would schedule the medal round of the month on what is regarded as the most difficult and lowest scoring course on our roster, perhaps someone had a point to prove. Whilst the course was in good order it still remained as difficult as ever and with a stiff breeze blowing it proved even more so.

A respectable group was present to endure the pain which was reflected in the scoring, although there were many times when scoring was lower than today.

One of the more pleasing aspects of Treasure Hill was the sight of maintenance staff continually making improvements to the course with just about all of the areas overgrown with grass now trimmed back nicely.

On his favourite course where at one time he never had less than thirty-six points, Robby Watts did the business again today taking first place with a net score of seventy-three, one ahead of Michael Brett. Kevin Labar took third on seventy-five points, Jimmy Carr brought up the rear with a net seventy-seven. Near pins were as listed.

Next week we have another challenging roster beginning on Monday at Eastern Star, another course where good course management is rewarded, followed by Pattaya Country Club and Pattavia.

Dave Ashman is the next of our seasonal visitors to arrive.
