What a day to start a week of golf at Mountain Shadow, a day to remember, or better still a day best forgotten. Over thirty percent of the golfers failed to register a score with four disqualified and six no returns, this was something of which nobody could be proud. To add insult to injury, scoring was some of the lowest we have seen and in stark contrast with the exceptional scores achieved recently.

Having seen two flights home cancelled Tom McMurray may finally be on his way home, not before going back to back taking the cash with him, what a Scotsman. The ever generous Pat Ryan took second place with a net score of net seventy-six and very discreetly made a generous donation to the delinquent fund as he so often does, Pat always keeps a low profile. Always in the mix, Danny Miller took third place with a net seventy-eight. Playing with an alleged broken toe, Tony Robbins took fourth place with a net eighty, but got no sympathy for his alleged injury. Jimmy Chawke took fifth and Mick McMahon got the final spot in the winners circle. For the second game in a row nobody was able to hit and stick on the eight green for a near pin, the other three went to Gerry Cooney, Pat Ryan, and Les Cobban.

The general consensus after the game was that Mountain Shadow is not a suitable course for one of our monthly medal games, it’s simply too difficult. A suggestion which has merit is that the bunkers at Mountain Shadow and Crystal Bay be treated as waste areas, given their poor condition.

A funny incident occurred after the game when Ian Flannigan locked himself in a shower cubicle and was forced to limbo under the door to get out, somebody called for help and the first to arrive was the lady locker room attendant to find Ian on his back under the door with the crown jewels on full display,  the things that happen around golf courses. For a small fee the scribe can supply video evidence.

A strange day in many ways for our monthly game at The Vintage Club. Firstly an unusually high number of Bunker Boys for  a mid-March game with twenty-four players in attendance,  hard to remember such numbers in recent years, secondly only one point separated the top five finishers.

The course was in excellent condition but a strong wind moderated scores. Whilst the game was not at snail’s pace it was still slow. Today’s winner Phil Mashiter returned a card of thirty-seven points to take the win from the ever improving Derek Salmon on countback. Sam Gershon headed the group on thirty-six points. Harvey Williams lost on a countback that came down to the last three holes on the back nine, and despite three no score holes, Michael Brett managed to squeeze into the final spot in the winners circle,  he did manage an unusual sandy birdie on the eleventh.

The biggest topic of discussion at the Bunker is the difficulty people whose holidays are over is trying to to get a flight back to their own country,  some are successful while others are constantly being rescheduled or changing carriers, most are being very sanguine about it with the view that is there a better place to be stranded?  one could only agree.

Winner at Mountain Shadow and Pleasant Valley, Tom McMurray

Nothing much changes at Pleasant Valley, despite an early tee time we were still subjected to a slow round,  out behind two six balls. While in the restaurant after the game we saw an eight ball on the ninth.

The course was in very good condition as evident from the scores. Just when we thought we had gotten rid of Tom McMurray, another cancelled flight kept him here a bit longer, he topped the score sheet again with another fantastic score, could he be just joking about cancelled flights? Danny Miller took second place with a fine forty-three, if he is around much longer, he will certainly be a contender for golfer of the month. A three-way tie for the remaining three places in the winner’s circle as listed. We almost got another hole in one where Derek Riordan got within a whisker on the island green, Mick McMahon got one on the short seventeenth with Uli Mueller taking two.

Next week we are making a flying two day trip to Royal Hills where we play a regular round and.6666666666666
