Bunker Boys Golf report for the week commencing Monday March 23rd.

Monday, March 23rd

Bangpra

1st Les Cobban (12) 34 points

2nd Paul Smith (5) 33 points

3rd Colin Greig (15) 31 points

4th Robby Watts (15) 31 points

Near pins, Paul McDonald, Uli Mueller,  & Jimmy Carr  X 2.

After about five months we got rained upon today at Bangpra, heavy enough to stop play for a short time, ironically staff we’re watering the eleventh fairway shortly before the rain fell. Rain is predicted to fall most of the week, although it is mostly for the Northern regions. A reasonable number of seventeen for today’s game,  and a clumsy number meaning we had three tree balls and two fourballs. It feels like we are finally out of high season, today the course was much more sane than recent visits.

Scoring was very average today with nobody playing to their handicap. Les Cobban was the only one to put in a decent effort closely followed by Paul Smith. Colin Greig and Robby Watts fought out the remaining two spots in the winners circle.  Jimmy Carr dominated the near pins taking two,  Paul McDonald and Uli Mueller got the remaining two.

A most unique situation occurred at the presentation where five in the winners circle failed to show, providing a great boost to a very worthy cause, the delinquent fund.

Treasure Hill

Medal

1st Davy Galvin (32) Net 69

2nd Colin Greig (15) Net 72

3rd Jimmy Carr (23) Net 75.

Near pins Colin Greig, Jimmy Carr, & Paul Smith X 2.

Despite another society out ahead of us we were still able to get away prior to our tee time and finish without any delays or holdups. Numbers were low today for two reasons, Treasure Hill is very difficult and not popular with many, and medal format also played a part.

Off a handicap of thirty-two Davy Galvin romped home on the back nine to take the number one spot with a net sixty-nine. In stableford points his back nine was an incredible twenty-six points with a five and four pointer amongst his scores, one feels a sharp cut for his next game on Friday. Colin Greig took second with a net seventy two. Jimmy Carr and Michael Brett could not be separated with equal scores on the back nine, last six, and last three

The one with the best score was Paul Smith with thirty-eight stableford points, unfortunately he didn’t finish one hole and was duly disqualified, some compensation was in store with two near pins, Jimmy and Colin got the other two.

After almost eighteen months away we make a return to Hermes on Friday, often described as a quirky course with a couple of silly holes. The playing surface is always in very nice condition so we expect a decent roll-up for this one.

Another big exodus of long stay seasonal visitors with the departure of Neil Jones, Neil Griffin, John Hughes, and Phil Mashiter so we may not get the number expected for Friday’s game.

Friday, March 27th

Hermes

1st Dave Ashman (28) 39 points

2nd Paul Smith (4) 38 points

3rd Colin Greig (15) 36 points

Near pins.Uwe Jurgensen, Hubert Stiefenhofer, & Michael Brett

Not a bad word to be said about Hermes today, we were able to tee off ahead of schedule and finish without any delays. The course was in beautiful condition as usual and the caddies were a class above what we are used to. The day was hot at times and the humidity high but a cooling breeze kept it comfortable.

Following all the departures in the last week we were down to twelve, a big change from early in the month when we regularly had twenty-eight or more.

While scoring was short of the very lofty standard of previous visits it was still very respectable. Playing some of the best golf anyone can remember and with a generous twenty-eight handicap Dave Ashman took pride of place at the top of the winners list with thirty-nine points off a handicap of twenty-eight. Along the way Paul Smith had a couple of miracle saves to take second place one back. Colin Greig took third on countback from Michael Brett and Hubert Stiefenhofer. Remarkably nobody was able to claim the first near pin on hole two, the others were as listed.

An away trip is planned to Kanchanaburi to avoid the madness that afflicts Pattaya during Songkran. Games are organise for Royal Ratchaburi, Grand Prix, and Evergreen Hills with possibly one more game, if not we will enjoy a down day to relax. Anyone interested should contact Colin Greig asap.
