Bunker Boys Golf report for the week commencing Monday February 2nd

Monday February 2nd

Bangpra

1st Ian Flannigan (20) 40 points

2nd Keith Norman (20) 36 points

3rd Colin Greig (15) 36 points

4th Derek Riordan (22) 35 points

Near pins,  John Hughes,  Colin Greig,  & Ian Flannigan X 2.

History has a habit of repeating itself at Bangpra as it did again today. We got away ahead of schedule and completed the front nine in good time,  however as has happened in the previous visits we found several groups on the tenth tee waiting to tee off, including a five-ball. Clearly someone had greased the marshal ‘s palms, nobody books to tee off from the back nine. As it happens once we got going again the rest of the round went smoothly. Something peculiar about the clubhouse is the fact that for a change room with about three hundred lockers there is only one sit down toilet which became very apparent today when it was out of order.

The course is still in good condition,  and is yet to show the high season wear and tear of other courses. As has been the case for weeks now the wind was blowing making scoring difficult.

Having not scored worse than his handicap in the last four rounds Ian Flannigan did it again today taking first place with forty points,  an excellent score on a challenging course.  Four strokes back Keith Norman took second place on countback from Colin Greig with Derek Riordan rounding out the winners list with thirty five points. Near pins were as listed.

Preparations for the annual memorial competition to be held on Friday are complete with a full house of ten groups ready to compete in both the individual and team competition,  a good day is assured, although Mountain Shadow may have an influence on how much enjoyment is had.

Wednesday January 4th

Treasure Hill

1st Colin Greig (15) 43 points

2nd Paul Smith (4) 39 points

3rd Ken Smith (27) 36 points

4th Jimmy Carr (25) 35 points

5th Tony Robbins (27) 35 points

Near pins Sam McDonnell, & Colin Greig X 3.

Things were much more orderly today at Treasure Hill than our previous visit,  no delay checking in, and tee off immediately with no hold-ups anywhere on the course. As it’s been dry for a long time trees are shedding their leaves so finding balls in the rough was problematic due to leaf litter,  but caddies without a customer were busy cleaning up, otherwise the course was in good condition.

Given that Treasure Hill is considered one of the most difficult courses on our roster today’s scores belie that notion with some of the best scoring on any course for a while. In rare blistering form lately Colin Greig took the honours today with forty-three points as well as three near pins. Having gone back to back in the golfer of the month can anyone stop a three peat, clearly he is enjoying the move to the forward tees. Off a four handicap Paul Smith produced probably the best round of the day with thirty-nine points. The other Smith (no relation) Ken came third with thirty-six points, while Jimmy Carr outpointed Tony Robbins on countback for fourth place. Sam McDonnell got the remaining near pin on the seventeenth, getting very close, thoughts of another hole in one among his playing partners.

There seemed no reason for the late tee time today as the course was not busy, are we seeing the last of high season crowds?

The annual Memorial Competition was held at Mountain Shadow where we had a full house of forty players. The day got off to a bad start with a wait of over an hour before the first group got away. No caddies or carts meant that every group had to wait for the caddies on the eighteenth to finish before they could begin their round. As a result not everybody was in the correct frame of mind for golf.

Apart from the bunkers the course was in decent condition.

In the individual event Brendan Harnett took the honours with a decent score of thirty-six points despite faltering on the closing holes. The remaining scores were as listed. In the near pins competition, despite there being forty players nobody managed to hit the eight green, the remaining near pins went to Brendan Harnett, Eddie Kost, & Michael Brett.

The team competition was won by the team of Craig Dows, Robby Watts ,Richard Baldotto & Jimmy Carr. Due mostly to Brendan Harnett the runners up were the team of Uwe Jurgensen, Tony Robbins, Brendan, and Michael Brett.

The after match presentation was held back at the Sports Lounge where once again we had a full house
