Pattaya Country Club is at the top end of the range of pricing acceptable to most Bunker Boys, today we had a slight reduction in pricing due to use of PSC vouchers although many question the cart pricing which is at the very top end of what is reasonable.

As usual the course was in very good condition and is benefiting from having had the fairways returfed some time ago and also some recent rain. After weeks of playing in dull overcast conditions it was nice to play in bright sunshine today although it got a bit hot at times.

Pattaya Country is quickly getting  a reputation for slow play as was the case again today, something that probably contributed to the unusually low scores. Constantly being held up causes players to lose concentration and rhythm and adds a layer of frustration which is not conducive to good play. To make matters worse the marshall inserted a group on the tenth tee causing further delay, not a popular move.

Kevin LaBar took the honours today with thirty-four points, two ahead of a group of three who were separated on countback. Alan Sullivan took a near pin with Michael Brett taking three when all four beckoned, the pressure to join the “all four club” was too much.

Wednesday August 7th

Treasure Hill

2nd Geoff Parker (22) 34 points

3rd Raleigh Gosney (22) 34 points

After the bright sunshine of Monday it was back to grey overcast skies again, indeed several times it looked like we were in for a drenching as thunder rumbled not too far away with black clouds and it looked like the wind would take it in our direction, fortunately it stayed away.

Treasure Hill is one of the better run courses in the region, green fees are reasonable, caddies are good, and there are always improvements being done to the course. As usual the course was in fine condition again today, but scoring was difficult once more.

Whilst scoring didn’t break any records it was still very tight at the top as listed. It was surprising that out of a field of nineteen the first of the par threes was unclaimed, the other three as listed.

Friday is going to be a ball-breaker as the course is Pattavia and the format medal, look for fireworks.

Friday, August 9th

Pattavia

1st Witt Mann (13) Net 69

2nd Kevin LaBar (12) Net 73

3rd Peter Gordon (16) Net 73

4th Les Cobban (11) Net 75

Near pins Witt Mann, Alan Sullivan & Kevin LaBar.

Today might rightly be called the great escape, at least weatherwise. A big storm raged over Laem Chabang and looked to be heading our way, fortunately we escaped with just a few drops, how long before our luck runs out?

Despite a number of locals being missing we still managed to assemble a field of twenty-three, our biggest low season field for some time.

The Pattavia course was probably in the best condition we have seen for a long time, it even had a decent covering of grass and with recent rain the greens were not as slippery as we have come to expect. Several of the water catchments actually had water in them. It was important to stay on the fairways as the rough was almost unplayable with thick deep grass.

Yet another slow round, it seems like some people think they are professionals and take way too long to play every shot, we should adopt the motto “a fast game is a good game”. There are times when one could play a game of chess while waiting for people ahead to play.

An excellent round by Witt Mann who took first place with a net sixty-nine, a cut in handicap is imminent. Kevin LaBar edged out Peter Gordon for second place while Les Cobban brought up the rear. Kevin was on point taking two near pins, one particularly good one on the long seventeenth . Alan Sullivan and Witt Mann took the other two.

A split round next week with some of our members taking a trip to Soi Dao who are currently running a special promotion of one night stay and two rounds of golf, all for the cost of four thousand-eight hundred baht. Those at home play Mountain Shadow on Monday and Navy on Wednesday.
