The Growling Swan 29/5

Thursday, 29th May – Mountain Shadow – Stroke – Monthly Mug

 Gerd Wins His Second Mug!

We had an excellent field of 31 for this the May Monthly Mug Competition and with the help of several of our car owning golfers we were able to get everyone else in 2 mini vans. We assembled at The Growling Swan prior to departure and were happy to welcome Paul Sharples from Oman. Gordon Clegg from Saudi Arabia, Vai Sa from Melbourne and formerly Samoa, Patrick Poussier returning from a month or so in France and Mashi Kaneta with us once more. Everyone was on time so we left the GS right on time at 8.30 am and after a smooth drive up number 7 we arrived at Mountain Shadow 43 minutes later. The golf course was not at all busy so there was time for a few practice putts before we made our way down to the first tee and our first four ball got away 10 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 am. I reminded everyone that this was a stroke round as always when we compete for The Growling Swan Monthly Mug and also told all that presentations would be back at the bar. It was hot & humid as usual with very little breeze and we proceeded at a fairly good pace armed with plenty of water and other drinks although it was necessary to take a couple of drinks breaks during the round due to the steamy conditions. The course was in fine shape although the greens were a little bit inconsistent having been sanded fairly recently and they were somewhat slower than on previous occasions. We battled on, not having to search for any lost balls and completed the full round in four and a half hours. It had been very enjoyable and the company was first class.

In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 Divisions with A Division being for handicaps 0 to 22 & B Division for handicaps of 23 and over with 5 prizes in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.

Probably our most consistent golfer at the minute is Gerd Riedler and he was the winner of The Monthly Mug (his second) with a fine net 71. Mark West was declared the winner in Division A with a net 72 and with 2 golfers on net 74 a count back saw Mike “Hunter” Gosden (net 34 back nine) finish second from your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (net 35 back nine) in third spot. Ebrahim came fourth with a net 75 and fifth place went to Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who finished with a net 76. In B Division the winner was Gary Monley with net 75, Andrew “Turtle” Allen came second with a net 78 and Fred Dineley was third with a net 81. There were 2 golfers tied on net 83 and the resultant count back determined that Frank “Woody” Donnelly (net 40 back nine) finished in fourth place from Geri Crilly (net 41 back nine) in fifth spot.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Growling Swan Mine Host Peter Grey and he accepted the cap gracefully and wore it for quite some time back in the bar.  As usual presentations were back at the bar on this occasion and we all thanked Mine Host Peter Grey for sponsoring the Mug and also providing a delicious chicken supper. There was a very good crowd back at the bar and many of us stayed for quite some time enjoying the facilities there whilst watching Peter Grey’s Sydney Swans hand out an absolute thrashing to the Geelong Cats in the AFL. Another very successful day and a great day’s golf on a fine golf course with a great bunch of guys.
