The Growling Swan 27/03
Thursday, 27th March – The Emerald – Stroke – Monthly Mug
Gary Monley Wins The 22nd Monthly Mug!
The Emerald seemed to be a very popular choice for the 22nd Growling Swan Monthly Mug as there were 36 starters eager to participate in this event and we gathered at the bar prior to departure. Welcomes were handed out to Peter Hausberger from Australia, Jim Parris from South Carolina, USA, Alan Evans from Brisbane, Peter Bye from everywhere, Russell Calcutt back from a short trip to Melbourne and Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper now recovered after falling off his motorbike. As everyone was on time we were able to get our 3 mini vans away right on time at 8.30 am and we headed South & after a very good run arrived at the Golf Course 43 minutes later. It was very quiet so there were no delays and we were able to tee off at our leisure and our first four ball got away 15 minutes early at 9.45 am with the weather quite hot and very little wind. This was a stroke round as it always is when competing for “The Mug” so it was necessary to remind everyone of that and with no-one in front of us we proceeded at a good pace. The course was in quite good shape and the greens, although hard were well kept and true & very quick at times. As mentioned earlier it was quite hot & humid so plenty of water was consumed and we had a 10 minute break at half time in an attempt to recharge the batteries. We didn’t hold up the field as the group behind were not exactly “up our backsides” and we had quite a leisurely back nine and completed the round in the reasonably slow time of four hours and forty five minutes.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 3 Divisions with A Division being for handicaps 0 to 14, B Division for handicaps of 15 to 23 and C Division for handicaps of 24 and over with 4 prizes in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The Golf Course was the winner on the day as just 1 golfer was able to play to their handicap or better and that was Gary Monley who won his first Monthly Mug with a net 71. In Division A the winner was Sal Brizzi (net 35 back nine) with a net 73 on a count back from Mike Allidi (net 36 back nine) in second place and Ed Wyckoff (net 37 back nine) was third. Martin Todd finished fourth with a net 74. Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei won Division B with net 73 and Ebrahim came second with net 76, one better than Roy “Plums Dayton” in third place. With 2 golfers scoring net 78 a count back was required which saw Tom McMahon (net 35 back nine) take fourth spot from an unlucky Thientong Charoenrung (net 37 back nine). In C Division Geri Crilly was victorious with net 74 and Rita Zoebelli was runner up with net 76. Third place went to Andrew “Turtle” Allen who had net 77 and Lyndsay Slender took fourth spot with a net 79.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Growling Swan Mine Host Peter Grey and he accepted the cap gracefully and wore it for quite some time back in the bar. As usual presentations were back at the bar on this occasion and we all thanked Mine Host Peter Grey for sponsoring the Mug and also providing a delicious buffet supper. Quite a few of us stayed for several Aussie cold, low priced beers as we discussed the day’s events and were treated to many words of “wisdom” from the usually quiet but affable Nolan “Not so” Wise who had fallen into J J’s trap and consumed many “tankards of meade” during his round. J J Harney’s attempt to join the “Growling Swan Delinquent’s Club” was thwarted by Delinquent’s President Peter Grey who declared that J J’s handicap was far too high to join this exclusive group. It had been another great day with a top set of guys & gals and we look forward to many more of the same.
