The Growling Swan 24/03
Monday, 24th March – Greenwood, A & C – Stableford
Marco & Geri Steal The Show!
There were 23 of us signed up for the game at Greenwood and we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure. We welcomed Marco Beer from Switzerland, Andrea Dal Ponte from Valencia in Italy, Harry Kelly from Perth in Western Australia and now living in Korat plus the return of Bob Akapita who we will now see a lot more of as he has retired from his work at Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was once again time to farewell David “Fletch” Fletcher who is off back to his job in Western Australia but will soon be back again. We left the GS 5 minutes earlier than our scheduled 8.30 departure time and headed off through the heavy Monday morning Pattaya traffic and after a good run up 331 we arrived at an almost deserted Greenwood Golf Course 55 minutes later. A fairly quick check in and preparation saw us ready for action and as we had been allocated the C and A nines in that order our first four ball got away on C1 10 minutes earlier than our booked time of 10.00 am. It was hot and humid with not much wind so we knew that the liquid intake was vital and we proceeded at a very good pace with no other golfers anywhere in sight – “millionaire’s golf!” The Golf Course was in great shape as usual and the greens were very firm & true and it was a very enjoyable round of golf which was completed in a couple of minutes over four hours.
We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 18 & Division B for golfers on handicaps of 19 and over with three places in each Division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.
Marco Beer was the winner in Division A with a fine 42 points and your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn was second with 40 points. With 3 golfers on 39 points vying for third spot a count back was required which saw Bob Akapita (23 point back nine) prevailing from Ebrahim (20 point back nine) and Frankie “Hollywood” Sharratt (17 point back nine). In B Division it was a return to form for Geri Crilly who was the winner with 41 points and Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge was second with 39 points, 2 points ahead of Ken Hole in third place.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Harry Kelly who accepted the award like the good sport that he is and wore the cap for a considerable time in the bar afterwards. J C then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers. It was then back to the bar for some well earned liquid refreshment and several of us stayed for quite some time enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and good company.
