Blacky On Top At The Hill!

After some heavy overnight rain it was a gloomy Thursday morning as we made our way to The Growling Swan in readiness for our trip up 331 to the challenging Treasure Hill Golf Course. There was one “no show” which made our playing list 19 for the day and we welcomed Ian Steele from Cairns, Queensland, Mickey Nield from Oldham in the UK and his lady Tun & from Melbourne, Victoria Rocky Lawson, Robert Cross & Peter McDonald. It was sadly time to say farewell to Gordon Clegg who will shortly be returning to his work in Saudi Arabia. We departed the GS right on time at 8.30 am and in overcast conditions we made our way to the course, arriving there after a 50 minute drive. It was very quiet there and after a speedy check in we made our way down to the vicinity of the first tee where a few of us had plenty of time for a few practice putts before heading off to the start. Our first four ball got away at 9.50 am in very light drizzling rain which soon stopped although the weather was threatening but the golf course was in terrific shape and gets better all the time. The greens had been sanded fairly recently but did not pose any real problems and were in the main firm and true. We proceeded at a fairly good pace although we did slow down somewhat on the second nine as the thunder started and it became very humid but thankfully the rain gods were once again with us and after we had completed the round in four hours & twenty five minutes the heavens opened and just the last couple of groups did get a bit wet. It had been another very enjoyable round of golf with great company.

We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 14 & Division B for golfers on handicaps of 15 and over with three places in each Division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the par 3’s and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.

A Division winner was your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn with 37 points and Mike Allidi came second with 35 points. With 3 golfers scoring 34 points a count back was required which resulted in third place being awarded to Mashi Kaneta (17 point back nine) with Gerd Riedler (16 point back nine) and Ebrahim (15 point back nine) just missing out. Ian Steele was the winner of Division B with 30 points and John Anderson was second on 27 points with Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper in third spot with 25 points.

Results for Treasure Hill:

Division A – 0 to 14
1st – Peter Blackburn (12) – 37 points
2nd – Mike Allidi (2) – 35 points
3rd – Mashi Kaneta (14) – 34 points

Division B – 15 & over

3rd – Sandy Leiper (34) – 25 points

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by the visiting Rocky Lawson and he accepted the award like the good sport that he is and wore the cap for a considerable time in the bar afterwards. Gerd then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers. Back at the bar afterwards where the Aussie cold, low priced beers were flowing we watched the NRL on TV and of course discussed the day’s proceedings although this time Geri’s input was somewhat limited, probably due to his “ordinary” score on the day but he did remind us of his birdie and the fact that he had beaten “Notso’s” score. Lots of good humored banter with some very funny guys.
