The Growling Swan 03/12

Crystal Bay-Stableford

Rifraff, Mr Wilson and the Leapafrog!

Thirty Two golfers with extreme optimists headed out last Thursday for the Growling Swan venture to Crystal Bay. Greetings were handed out to Frank Waterhouse and Jim Murray.

There was good and bad news on our bus. Turtle Allen was rather miffed after discovering that his lovely new (Norwegian Blue’ parrot) Driver Head Cover had been eaten by Wayco’s cat, but worse followed when a mystery man dropped his play lunch on the bus and all hell broke loose.

The weather was sultry muggy for our 8 groups We played C and A Nines in that order (A nine was used for the count-backs). The course was in good nick but struggled against some power hitters off the yellow tees.

Stuart Rifkin blitzed on the back nine (25pts) to eke out a win alongside George Wilson and Sandy Leiper in their respective grades. Sandy obviously enjoys this course, being a past winner. Other bouquet performances were from Don Richardson, Alex Field and Frank Riley, whilst JJ Harney and Max Bracegirdle were delighted with their placings.

It was great to see Allain Taddai back playing golf after his extended layoff. Welcome back Papa!

Deefa (our charity collector dog) was delighted to receive many donations and the players are thanked for their continued generosity.
Back at ‘The Swan’, farewells were toasted with cold beers to Gene Bransen and Mal Ford and mine host Peter Grey was thanked for putting on the fine spread. The GS is a friendly golf outlet and welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 0861 503086.

The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Wednesdays at 10 AM to play at Cocos on undercover synthetic greens and on Sundays at the same time for open grass bowling at The Retreat. Please contact Paul Rennison on 0843 454005 if you wish to partake. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.
