The Growling Swan 03/03

Monday, 3rd March – Crystal Bay, C & A – Stableford

Hunter & Clouseau Sparkle At Crystal Bay!

There were 18 of us signed up to play the popular Crystal Bay Golf Course and we met at The Growling Swan in readiness for the journey north up No. 3. Not a big field but many welcomes were handed out including Ken Hole back from a spell, Bob Akapita from his work at Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia, Dick Braimbridge back from two and a half months in Queensland, Steve Truelove from Sydney, Takeshi Hakozaki from Japan, Bob Britton from Essex in the UK, Neil Horton from Bundaberg in Queensland and Ian Jessiman from Harrington on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. With the help of Mark West & Alain Taddei we required only one mini van and departed the GS five minutes early at 8.25 am and made our way slowly through the somewhat heavy Pattaya Monday morning traffic. It took 50 minutes to get to the course which was fairly quiet and after finding we were to play C & A nines in that order we headed for the tee on C1 and got our first group, a three ball away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am. The weather was hot with some wind and the golf course was in good shape with the greens being very well maintained and with no-one immediately in front of us we set a very good pace. Things did slow down with three holes to go as we caught up with the groups ahead but we still managed to complete our full round in the very good time of three hours & fifty minutes. It had been once again a very enjoyable round of golf with first class company.

We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 16 & Division B for golfers on handicaps of 17 and over with three places in each Division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.

The A Division winner was Mike “Hunter” Gosden who continued his good form and had 38 points with Mark “Westy” West finishing second on 37 points and Steve Truelove was third with 36 points. Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei was the winner in B Division with 38 points, one point better than Ken Hole in second place and Geri Crilly was third on 35 points.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Frank “Woody” Donnelly who accepted the award like the good sport that he is. J C then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers. It was then back to The Growling Swan for some Aussie cold, low priced beers and whilst not a big crowd back there a quality one and we sat and watched the cricket and chatted away merrily.
