Rogers racks up the points!
Monday 5th – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Jack Grindvold (3) 40 points
2nd – Kenny Aihara (4) 37 points
2nd – John Emmerson (12) 37 points
Firstly, we were talking about TPC Sawgrass a lot this week as of course The Players has been on TV so much. One thing that struck me was the similarity with our local Pete Dye course of Khao Kheow with the B-8 and B-9 holes bearing great similarity to the Ponte Vedra equivalent with holes 17 and 18. Keep it in mind the next time you stand on the par 3 island green!
Also, congratulations to our mates at the Pattaya Cricket Club for their victory over Bangkok to claim Cricket Champions of Thailand! Our regular Monday golfer David Callick was also Man of the Match so best to him as well!
It was a lucky day for us, as thunder and lightning were all in the distance as we finished a dry and pleasant round at Green Valley. Some of our mates played Burapha and got hit with heavy rain, but (touch wood) we got away with it! The fifth day of the fifth month proved to be especially auspicious for our Swedish buddy Jack Grindvold. Jack signed up very last minute and I would bet that he is glad he did. You earn your points when you play off a 3 handicap and to shoot 1 under is a brilliant round of golf!
As usual, Kenny Aihara was in the foray once more and shared second place with John Emmerson, both with fine scorecards of 37 points. John will be heading up to Ayutthaya this weekend to attend Johnny Bahng’s wedding ceremony and we wish him and the new wife all the best for their future together.
Peter Rogers, Frank Kelly & Kenny Aihara.
Wednesday 7th – Pattana A & B – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Frank Kelly (14) 38 points
2nd – Kenny Aihara (4) 30 points
2nd – Peter Rogers (22) 30 points
This is getting to be the time of year where we roll the old roulette wheel to see if the course scheduled is looking like rain. You just never know where the isolated showers are going to hit and I have seen sunshine on Laem Chabang with black clouds and rain at Burapha, and vice versa.
Pattana was the venue this Wednesday and the course was very impressive. It was in great nick overall and the facilities are among the best that Pattaya has to offer. We all had very good caddies in our group and the pace of play was quite good. That said, we still had a near 5 hour round as the rain delays kept us scurrying back to the drinks stand, oh well. The funny thing about today’s golf is that we started out sweating like nobody’s business and by the time we all got wet and the wind picked up, we were begging for a cup of hot coffee. Why the devil they have a huge pot of hot water for the Cup Noodles and cannot stock a jar of coffee is a mystery.
Frank Kelly beat the field by 8 shots, it’s that simple. I can’t remember when someone won by that large of a margin, especially with all the distractions, but well played to you sir for the well earned first place. Killer Kenny Aihara did not have one of his better days on the course but still managed to find second place as he tied with Peter Rogers. His short game did not let him down!
Some of the lads did not want to wait for the rain (and lightning) to clear, but for those who waited, it was a glorious finish in the late afternoon soft sunshine and long shadows. Pattana will provide you with an extremely fine day on the golf course, weather permitting!
Peter Rogers with Greenwood winner Frank Tordeur.
Friday 9th – Greenwood A & B – Stableford – White Tees
1st – Frank Tordeur (16) 38 points
2nd – Peter Rogers (22) 35 points
3rd – Ron Delk (15) 34 points
A very popular course on our roster, Greenwood never fails to deliver. Today we were off the A & B tracks which were both in pretty good condition. The ground was wet afoot hence we had very little roll on the ball, so it proved a long and tough slog.
Our Belgian buddy Frank Tordeur had the best game of his past week in Pattaya and a score of 38 put him on top of the podium for today’s competition. Peter Rogers once again delivered the goods and claimed another second place this week while Ron Delk finished a shot behind on 34 points for third.
Thanks to all who joined us this week for more fantastic golf in Pattaya.
