The Golf Club we 27/12

Mulberry for the Valley & Newbert for the Medal!

Steve Weller with Steve Mulberry back at The Club.

Monday 23rd – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Steve Mulberry (11) 37 points
2nd – Mike Newbert (10) 36 points
2nd – Brian Wilkinson (16) 36 points
3rd – Mick Beresford (17) 35 points

I would like to be serious for a moment and thank you all very very much for your support of The Golf Club in 2013. We had a great year, and I don’t just mean financially. Looking back at the past 12 months, I am so grateful for the new friendships made and also to see our regular good ol’ pals still ticking over! We are glad all you boys have had another healthy year and still be able to join us for some of the best golf in the world. Our best wishes to you and your families for the New Year from all of us here at The Golf Club, and Tek and little Ally at home.
It almost felt like winter here in Pattaya last week as temperatures got below 25 degrees Celsius and brought the coolest spell we have had for a long time indeed. Strange to see so many locals all bundled up and the bemused tourists wondering why we were such weather weenies. It made for perfect golf weather though, so off we went to Rayong Green Valley at our usual 8:15 departure time.
The course was found to be in great shape, and the greens were the fastest for quite some time. We had a full card of golfers so a terrific comp was on the cards for today. Visiting us from the world-famous Paradise Lounge as well as the equally renowned Players Lounge was tricky Micky Beresford, the picture of sartorial elegance both on and off the course. Mick went round a stroke off his handicap and his 35 points was enough for 3rd place.
At a tie for second place with 36 points, Brian Wilkinson and Mike Newbert both had the satisfaction of equaling their handicaps. Not easily done on this day as the wind and the slick greens delivered a tough test of golf.
The big winner on the day was long-time Golf Club (and Blackpool) supporter Steve Mulberry who was the only golfer to better his handicap today. Steve will be hosting the Mulberry Ryder Cup in mid January for the 11th year and this high season tradition is a long awaited event on the local golf calendar. Well played mate!

Meow and Nat with Brad Gearie and Wild Bill Eyles.

Wednesday 25th – Khao Kheow – Stableford – Yellow tees.
1st – Brad Gearie (13) 37 points
2nd – Peter Wilson (7) 33 points
2nd – Bill Eyles (27) 33 points

Christmas Day golf in the Kingdom, what better present could you give yourself? Khao Kheow was the destination today, and the course was found to be in excellent condition with greens both fast and true. This is always shown to be one of the best golf courses in the area and the signup sheet was full once again.

Bill Eyles has been playing some great golf lately and today was no exception. With 33 points on his card, Wild Bill came in tied for 2nd with Peter Wilson for another finish on the podium. Our Aussie mate Brad Gearie, a previous Monthly Medal winner, was King for a Day with a very respectable 37 points, a good score on this difficult golf course. We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas wherever and however you celebrated it!

Our thanks and best wishes also go to our night manager Khun Nat who is leaving us after a near 7 year stint with The Club. Thank you Nat for all your help over the years and good luck in the future!

Wild Bill Eyles, Mike Newbert with Phil Smedley back at TGC.

Friday 27th – Pattavia Century – Monthly Medal – White Tees
1st – Mike Newbert (10) 75 net
2nd – Bill Eyles (27) 77 net
3rd – Phil Smedley (11) 78 net

What a great course this has turned out to be! 98% of the lads who have played here would all like to come back and we will continue to support Pattavia and keep it on our play list for 2014. They are putting a lot of time and effort into the place and when the new clubhouse opens (in a couple of months?) it will be fantastic.

We chose Pattavia as our Monthly Medal knowing that no one would have an advantage here, as the course has not been played that much. This Nick Faldo design keeps getting better and better so we will be gaining our “local Knowledge” over the next several months.

Not surprisingly, I get comments all the time about Phil Smedley being such a great golf manager, so our thanks go to Phil for another great year of golf for The Golf Club. He is also a very tidy golfer and featured on today’s card with his net 78 off his 11 handicap for sole 3rd place. Just ahead of Phil was Wild Bill Eyles who has been in the frame for the last several weeks and his net 77 took 2nd place honours today.

Finally to the Monthly Medal winner. He is a guy who is a past winner, so his new Antigua shirt will have 2 gold stars on it for December 2013 so congratulations to Mike Newbert aka The Montauk Mauler for a great finish to the year and all the best from us for 2014.

Have a Happy New year to all and see you in 2014 for more great golf in paradise.
