Loads of action for this week’s competitions so let’s get on with it. We have been chock-a-block these last few weeks and it has not died out yet. 36 golfers of all handicaps joined us today for our regular Monday at Green Valley. Despite thousands of rounds here, the course is still in really good shape. The cool weather still prevails in the evenings, but it is warming up in the daytime on the golf courses now.
He won here last week with a 38 and wins it again but this time with a stunning 41! I am beginning to think Peter LeNoury likes this course! Peter plays golf every day…and I mean every day. Except for the fact that last month he cracked a few ribs (but not at our BBQ night) and had to take a few days off, Peter is always up for a game. Well played mate, especially off your new 10 handicap.
Brad Sproxton was kind enough to fill in for Cap’t. Phil while on holiday, so as guest manager decided to employ 2 Flights and the countback system for today’s comp. The dreaded countback can be cruel to some, but not for Bob Mulholland as his 22 Stableford points on the back put him at the top of a trio of 39’s. Bob will be reading this from back in Scotland as he is off back to work for awhile now. See you next time pal!
Another departure was also on the flight list as Sonny Crawford is winging his way back to his base in Korea for a few months. Sonny shot a great 21 on the back, which would usually be good enough. Also at 39 but just 18 on the backside was our pal Chaten Patel who couldn’t quite match his brilliant 9 holes on the front side.
In the B Flight (15 handicap and above) it was all Barry Tregurtha as Bazza finished a full 3 points ahead of the rest. The Sultan of Soi Dao continued his fine form that started with last months’ Mulberry Ryder Cup. Ray Powell was in the frame again with a 35 and Barry “Good” Murnin tied with Geoff Doody on 34 to finish off the podium placings. Thanks again Brad! You da man!
Wednesday 12th – St. Andrews – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Ray Powell (16) 40 points
2nd – Mark Wood (9) 39 points
3rd – Kevin Moraghan (15) 38 points
3rd – John Emmerson (15) 38 points
There was only one big story of the day here, as Kevin Moraghan took only one swing with a 6 iron that flew 177 yards on the 3rd hole at St. Andrews for a hole-in one! It’s not his first though; young Kevin was only 7 years old when he had his first ace, so it has been a bit of a wait for ace number 2!
The beauty of that 3rd hole is that it is all downhill so you can track it the whole way. Screams were heard as far away as Silky Oaks, so I am told. Way to go Kevin! Remember, this is the number 1 handicap hole here at St. Andrews, so this is a great feat. Being the generous guy that he is, Kevin rang the bell not once, but twice, and those screams of joy from the lads here were also heard as far away as Silky Oaks.
Kevin’s regular playing partner John Emmerson ended up with a 38 on the day for a same-same score off the same-same handicap as the lads split the booty for joint 3rd. Next up the ladder was me old mate Markie Mark Wood as he carded a 39 for a great round of golf at this challenging track.
But today nobody could match the affable Englishman Ray Powell who had a heck of a round with a whopping 40 points to end up top of the heap! Ray looks to be one to watch for the Monthly Medal for sure. Ray had a perfectly consistent game today with 20 points on the front and 20 on the back!
Rod Stevens having a bevvie with Mark Wood.
Thursday 13th – Bangpakong – Stableford – Yellow Tees
1st – Yuzru Yamasaki (19) 40 points
2nd – Rod Stevens (23) 40 points
3rd – Reg Glass (15) 39 points
It was a howling wind that greeted us at Bangpakong, as if the course weren’t tough enough already. The course was in fine shape for the most part, but had a few patches of brown due to the lack of water as most course are experiencing these days. This is a great layout and is always a popular venue, even if it is another 15 minutes drive it is worth it.
Sometimes, but not often enough, everything just seems to go right on the golf course. There is no rhyme nor reason to it, it must be in the stars. It was that kind of day for our Canadian buddy Rod Stevens as he shot the best round of golf in ages and proudly posted a massive 40 points on the card. Visiting Yuzru Yamasaki also ended up with a fine score of 40 so congrats to these 2 guys who actually tamed Bangpakong.
Reg ‘have another“ Glass brought in a fine 39 that would have been a winner on another days’ outing, but better luck next time Reg!
Thanks to all who joined us for another great week of golf in paradise!
