The Golf Club 13/04

The Golf Club write up for 13 – 17 April

Steve Ellison

Monday 13th – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.

1st – Wilf Latham (12) 41 points

2nd – Dale Shier (14) 39 points

3rd – Stephen Dunn (10) 35 points

Just a small but respectable turnout today for Green Valley as lots of lads prepare for their Songkran (Thai New Year) Holidays. Many blokes get wrangled up to see the village in Issan where she comes from and the rest get stuck in the water fights here that are fun for one day. Unfortunately they last 6 days so most leave town on a golf trip.

Wilf chose to stay and it looks like he was rewarded with a brilliant score of 41! Dale could not join us as he prepares to get back to work so off to Bangkok later this week to get that sorted. Dale’s 39 gives him 2nd place, just as he did last week. Stephen Dunn is getting his form back and found the last spot on the podium with 35. Stephen has just opened “Scooters” bar on Soi Buakhao across from the Bangkok Bank with a Vespa theme. He has collected loads of Vespa and Lambretta memorabilia and his bar looks great so stop in and have a drink before he heads off to England next week.
Tuesday 14th – Rancho Charnveee – Stableford – White tees.

Day 1 of our Khao Yai Songkran Road Trip to Khao Yai  sees the Sandbaggin’ CSMF Martin Zimmerman win the day with a mere 37, Johnny “where’s the key?” Emmerson on 36 and Rod Stevens at 35 all get a jumpstart on the week that starts at the stunning Rancho Charnvee.

So beautiful to see this course in the late afternoon golden light as we were fortunate enough to get a 2 hour delayed start to the departure time. John forgot to leave the key for us so there we sat until Nat came to the rescue! Zero traffic saw us here in just 2 hours 35 minutes which is a record.

Steak dinners at Buffalo Bills right next door to the hotel went down a treat as Captain Phil lubricated the table with Johnny Walker. So glad not to be in Pattaya this week but hope those hostages still there managed to have a relatively dry day.

The par 4 5th at Khao Yai Golf Club

Wednesday 15th – Khao Yai Golf Club – Stableford – Blue tees.

Day 2 at Khao Yai Golf Club. Amazing setting for this Jack Nicklaus track, perfect cool weather up here and the course to ourselves. Zimmerman wins again with 38, Billy Eyles 37, Rod Stevens 37, John Emmerson 37. Must dash, wine & cheese night!

Another stunning vista at KYGC.

Friday 17th – Rancho Charnvee – Stableford – White tees.

Back to Rancho again as everybody loves this golf course! This is really a first class operation and is always in great nick. I think we all found that the greens were running a bit slow but that was the only comment to the negative we could muster. We had a bit of a breeze today which was a relief from the warmer than usual weather.

Winner today was Peter LeNoury with a brilliant 40 points – the best round of the tournament- with Canadian Rod Stevens a strong 38 points and Michael Otterman turning in a 33 pointer for third place.

We found the new “SmokeHouse” restaurant called Ribsmannn up the 2090 just before the St. Stephens school and it was excellent. It seats around 500 people and is a very impressive operation we can all recommend.

Saturday 18th – Panorama – Stableford – Blue tees.

Panorama was the venue today for the last round of this years comp and all was at stake. Any one of 6 guys were in the position to win this thing so it was a great test to see who would prevail.

With wins on the first 2 days, Martin Zimmerman could only take 3rd for the grand finale and with a 4 day total of 127 ends his Songkran bash in style. Getting 132 points totaled up for the 4 cards, Rod Stevens came up just one shot short as his final day 21 disappointed in the end. Still, that is a great run and the 22 handicapper has a lot to be proud of. But  winning the final day and with that also the “Man of the Mountain” honours it is John Emmerson at first place with a 133 total for the 4 rounds. Thanks to all who joined us up in Khao Yai for a great time and a fun escape from Songkran for a week! Thanks also to the Hill Hotel in Pak

Chong who provided us with a fantastic home for the 6 nights we were there. They have the biggest and cleanest pool in town and clean and comfortable new rooms that everyone enjoyed.
