Steve Ellison

Monday 9th – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.

2nd – Kenny Aihara (3) 38 points

3rd –Fred Graham (16) 37 points

Update: That new golf course next to the Pattaya Country Club now has the first 9 holes open for play so by the time you read this we will have given it a try. Watch this space next week for our report on the newest track in Pattaya, Parichart Golf Club.

Greens are getting cored and sanded this time of year so you had better get used to it. Aerating the greens is a necessary evil for the health of the turf, otherwise those greens can’t breathe and the grass dies, so coring will make it all better in the long run.

About half the greens here today were lightly sanded, but they all rolled true and fast. If sanding is done properly and swept out correctly it will make little difference to the game, and as they say, it is in the same condition for everyone!

It was nice to have Rod Black with us today. Rod is visiting from the Pinjarra Golf Club where he is Club Captain and mates with Robbie Taylor and Ken Grimes. Pinjarra is just outside Perth so if you are in the neighbourhood, pop in and say hello! Rod had the best round out there today and his 39 points put him up at the top of the podium. Right behind on 38 was stalwart Kenny Aihara and yet another point back was Freddy Graham who is also playing some great golf these days.

Wednesday 11th – Treasure Hill – Stableford – White tees.

1st – Nick Thomas (10) 34 points

2nd – John Mulrooney (13) 33 points

3rd – Kenny Aihara (3) 32 points

It has been ages since we played here at Treasure Hill and it was good to be back. The course had made many improvements and is in excellent condition. This is the sister course to Kabinburi and Blue Canyon in Phuket and all designed by Yoshikazu Kato. It is one of the more difficult tracks in the Pattaya area and the mature layout and narrow design leave little margin for error, hence the low scoring today.

You know it’s a tough track when Kenny only ends up with 32 points on the card! Still, that was the number needed to take the last spot on the podium, so well done Ken. How do you like that new “3” handicap mate?

Up at 33 was Dubliner John Mulrooney. John has seen his game improve as he is spending less time carrying someone else’s golf bag and spending more time playing his own game. Neither could top Nick Thomas as his 34 point scorecard was the best of the day.

Friday 13th – Khao Kheow – Stableford – Yellow tees.

T – 1st –Chris Hanes (10) 33 points

T – 1st – Kenny Aihara (3) 33 points

T – 2nd – Walter Baechli (15) 32 points

T – 2nd – Jim Carlson  (21) 32 points

The “A” side of Khao Kheow is one of the best legs in Pattaya. This 9 takes you right up to the gates of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo and is quite literally at the doorstep of the jungle. We saw a small family of monkeys here running across the second hole and storming up a greenside palm tree. That is the first time I have ever seen monkeys on this course, but not the first time for some monkey business. We played the B & A tracks today and they were both in fantastic condition. Thanks to Mark West for getting us an amazing rate of 750 baht P.S.C. green fee!

It was a hot start to the day and the sweat was dripping even on the first tee box. There wasn’t much wind out there but by the end of the first 9, we were happy to see the clouds forming to provide some welcome shade. As it turned out, our last 2 groups got rained on for the last 2 holes! Be careful what you wish for, as they say.

Chris Hanes has been joining with us this week and today was his day to shine. Chris is from San Francisco but had no flowers in his hair, just a Titleist cap. In spite of a couple of blowout holes, he managed to gather 33 points out there and ended up tied for first with Kenny Aihara. The next 2 lads also ended up with a draw but a shot back on 32 so well done to Jim Carlson and to Walter Baechli, who generously donated his handsome man vouchers to the Caddy Smile program. Thanks to everyone for your support of The Golf Club, we greatly appreciate it.
