Songkran Festival starts off with some fine golf
This week saw us at two popular courses on our regular schedule: Tuesday it was back to Greenwood which was in good condition and as always enjoyable to play.
The only drawback was that the course was incredibly crowded – not with golfers but with flies! Sam Gettingby’s caddy must have packed honey sandwiches in her lunch bag, as their buggy was like a moveable cloud of flies, midges and other pests.
Scores for the day were generally good, but in the end it was Jonathan Pratt with 38 points who edged out Stan Rees with 37 points for the top spot.
Several of the par 3’s here are at such a long length to be almost 4 shotters for most of us, and that was reflected in the fact no one even got on any of the greens until almost the last shot of the day when Jonathan Pratt scooped up all the prize money by getting his tee shot on the last green by just a foot.
On Thusday, and the first day of the Sonkran Festival, it was on to Eastern Star, where we received a very pleasant Sonkran welcome from the staff. I don’t know what was in that welcome drink, but we all played the first nine holes abysmally.
However, things improved for most players on the back nine with Paddy Devereux and Jonathan Pratt both carding 18 points on the back to tie in the lead with 31 points. Paddy had been playing steadily, until the par 3 17th tripped him up to end up losing on countback.
Near pins were shared between Jonathan Pratt and Dave Smith who had a fantastic shot on the 175 yard 17th to within a few feet of the hole.
