Monday, 10th August – Crystal Bay, C & A – Stableford

Woody Wins In A Tight One!

There were just 10 of us for this the first game of the week as several of our members were away on Visa runs and we headed off up the Motorway once again a little earlier than usual for our visit to Crystal Bay. We welcomed back Frank “Woody” Donnelly who is back from his trip to Cambodia and said farewell to Jared Undery who will shortly return to Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia but this being his first trip to Thailand and having caught the “Pattaya Bug” he vowed to return real soon. The course was fairly quiet and C & A were the designated nines for us in that order and our first group, a three ball teed off on C1 7 minutes earlier than our scheduled 9.44am tee time. The golf course condition was ok but a bit dry and the greens were not the best but I’m sure things will be better when we play here again next month. We managed to get through a Korean lady four ball before the 7th hole which enabled us to set a cracking pace and our round was completed in just three & a half hours. It was then back to The Phantom Bar for presentations & complimentary Pizzas and French Fries.

After not having played golf for a few weeks Frank “Woody” Donnelly did well to score 38 points and was the winner on the day with Gerd Riedler coming second with 37 points and your writer, Peter Blackburn finishing in third spot with 36 points.

1st – Frank Donnelly (24) – 38 points
2nd – Gerd Riedler (7) – 37 points
3rd – Peter Blackburn (15) – 36 points

C7 – Frank Donnelly

A9 – Jared Undery
Friday 14th August – Plutaluang, North & West – Stableford

Jonesy Has His First Phantom Win!

Another good turnout for our game at Plutaluang with 4 groups on the Starting Sheet and we left The Phantom Bar right on time at 8.30am and headed South down Sukhumvit. We welcomed Stuart Mann from Canberra in Australia and it was good to see John Swanson having a game with us once again. Arriving 42 minutes later we found the Golf Course quite busy and discovered that on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays it is now compulsory cart there. This is a surprising “revenue raiser” by this course as they have previously always kept prices down, particularly in the “low season”. North & West were our allocated nines & we teed off on North 1 10 minutes before our 10.00am tee time. The weather was terrific and the course was in good shape although some fairways were dry & hard but the greens were in very good despite grumbling from a couple of our members but to be honest it could just have been and probably was “bad putting” as our group found the greens more than acceptable. Although there was “traffic” directly ahead of us we made excellent time and completed our round in three hours & forty five minutes. Then it was back to The Phantom Bar for complimentary Pizzas & French Fries followed by presentations.

Iain “Jonesy” Jones was the player of the day and his 36 points secured for him his very first win with the Phantom Golf Society. In second place was your writer, Peter Blackburn with 33 points and our resident “Biker” Mogens Melander came third having scored 32 points.

West 3 – Frank Donnelly

West 9 – Iain Jones
