Phil Davies Wins On A Slow Day!

It was time to play the “Monkey Course” again and we had a healthy four groups signed up to play. The skies were very grey on the journey to the course and there were a few drops of rain but by the time we got to Bangpra it was fine and clear. We handed out welcomes to Welshman Phil Davies, now residing in Pattaya, Frank “Woody” Donnelly returning after several weeks in Vietnam, my old mate John Pierrel from Houston Texas and the wandering Graham “Grunter” Buckingham. It was very busy on this their Sports Day and it was disappointing to see that they had dropped their 400 baht cart promotion from July 1 onwards so I immediately informed the PSC Office to change the rate on their current schedule. With plenty of time for some practice putts before our 10.30am tee time we then waited for seven groups from a non PSC affiliated society to tee off and our first group got away about 10 minutes later than scheduled. I do not usually “bag” other societies but I have to say that many of the groups in front of ours need to be much more aware of golf etiquette, in particular the slow play rule as was pointed out to the group in front of our first one who were posing for photographs of one another on the 12th tee while they were half a hole behind! This was pointed out to them in no uncertain terms by one of our members and whilst they took offence it did quicken things up a bit. I will have to check out the schedule in future to try and avoid this lot as our rounds took just a bit under five hours – unacceptable! Apart from that the course was in good shape and the greens appear to be getting back to their “slick” self again.

Phil Davies was the winner with 33 points and in a count back for second & third with 2 golfers on 32 points it was Graham Buckingham (14 point back nine) who took the honour from Tony Cook (10 point back nine) in third spot. Fourth place went to Frank Donnelly who had 31 points.

1st – Phil Davies (16) – 33 points
2nd – Graham Buckingham (22) – 32 points
3rd – Tony Cook (29) – 32 points
4th – Frank Donnelly (23) – 31 points

8th – Wan Makmul
18th – Frank Donnelly

Wednesday, 8th July – Khao Kheow, B & A – Stableford
Barton Blitzes The Field!
We had three groups on the Starting Sheet and a late tee time so it was breakfast at The Phantom Bar before we headed off up number 7 to the Khao Kheow Golf Course. A fairly quick trip saw us arrive just under 40 minutes later and we were able to get our first group away 46 minutes early at 10.00am off B1 after being allocated B & C nines in that order. The weather was good and the golf course in fine shape as usual and with the groups in front of us not wasting any time we maintained a fair pace and all our groups completed the round in well under four hours.

With most golfers struggling on the day it was Adam Barton who stole the show by compiling 39 points and easily won the competition with veteran Ken Hole in second place on 33 points and Steve Newton third with 29 points
1st – Adam Barton (14) – 39 points
2nd – Ken Hole (18) – 33 points
3rd – Steve Newton (27) – 29 points

A3 – Steve Newton

Thursday 9th & Friday 10th July – Kabinburi Sports Club – Stableford

Our First Away Trip A Big Success!

This was the first away trip for Phantom Golf Society and we had 20 eager golfers who were very much looking forward to doing something different. The format was leave Pattaya on Thursday morning and travel to Kabinburi, check into the Kabinburi Sports Club accommodation, play golf there on Thursday afternoon, stay the night, play on Friday morning and then return to Pattaya on Friday afternoon. We left Pattaya at 8.00am and after just a two and a half hour drive arrived at Kabinburi, checked in and were ready to meet our 12 midday tee time. For the first game we played Stableford off the white tees and after the game all the cards were drawn out in pairs, the 2 scores added together to achieve a first, second, third & fourth result. The golf course was in fantastic shape with lush fairways and very well maintained greens and it is certainly a challenging but super layout. The rooms were excellent and great value and the staff could not have been more obliging. On the first day the winning pair was Phil Davies and Dipty Narongsak with a total of 67 points and Kevin Fernadez and Tony Cook came third with 59 points. Gerd Riedler & Larry Gibb were third with 58 points and Neil Skilton & Mogens Melander finished in fourth spot with 56 points. On the Friday we played the “Rainbow” format which required all the men golfers to play 6 tee shots off the white tees, 6 tee shots off the yellow tees and 6 tee shots off the red tees. The tee colour could be nominated before each tee shot and the ladies played all their tee shots off their normal red tees. After the Friday round all the individual scores for the 2 rounds were added together to arrive at an overall first, second, third & fourth. The overall winner was Kevin Fernandez with 81 points, 10 points ahead of Dipty Narongsak in second place. Then came a count back with big Aussie Steve Truelove (37 points in the second game) finishing third and in fourth place was our resident “Bikey” Mogens Melander (34 points in the second game) with both players having a total of 64 points.

Everyone agreed it had been a great 2 days on a terrific golf course with fantastic staff and at very reasonable prices and we will certainly be back there before too long.
