Lorraine Has Her First Win!

On a fine & sunny Monday morning we headed South to Eastern Star Golf Course where we had 3 groups signed up to play. We decided to have some fun and play off the shorter yellow tees and it certainly does make a difference on this fairly challenging layout. The course was in good condition although most fairways were somewhat dry but the greens were very good and well maintained. Our good friend Mogens, the intrepid Harley biker managed to “get his own back” on the day and sported a nasty cut on his cheek after he fired one ball into a tree and it came back and hit him. He was complaining that the tree didn’t yell out “fore”! The course was practically deserted so there were no hold ups and all groups finished their rounds in round about four hours.

“Auntie” Lorraine Percy shot a very good 42 points for her very first win with us and Takeshi Hakozaki finished second with 41 points and your writer, Peter Blackburn ended up in third place with 40 points.

1st – Lorraine Percy (34) – 42 points
2nd – Takeshi Hakozaki (13) – 41 points
3rd – Peter Blackburn (15) – 40 points

13th – Peter Blackburn
18th – Lorraine Percy

Phantom Golf Cup No.2

Jack Grindvold Shoots Lowest Gross!
This was the second Phantom Golf Cup Tournament and once again the interest shown was very good as we had 37 players on the Starting Sheet after some late cancellations. There was a bit of a change in format as it was suggested that we have a low gross prize so we settled on A Flight (0 to 9 ) playing stroke from the white tees and B Flight (10 to 20) & C Flight (21 & over) both playing from the yellow tees. I managed to manipulate four of the A Flight players into the same group which resulted in an interesting tussle and much appreciated by them. There were technical awards on each hole, 6 holes for A Flight, 6 holes for B Flight and 6 holes for C Flight giving everyone a fair chance and the awards varied from nearest the pin on par threes, longest drives, longest first putts, nearest the pin in two shots, nearest the pin in 3 shots & nearest to the box on the fairway. The weather was excellent with blue skies all day and the golf course was in superb condition which was an absolute bargain at Green Fee, Caddy Fee & Cart Fee for 1,300 baht. The first group got away early at 9.50am and with very few hold ups throughout the day most groups finished their rounds in four hours & fifteen minutes and less.

Apart from the 18 technical awards there was a low gross prize, first place in A Flight net and first second & third prizes in both B & C flights who played stableford. Presentations were held back at The Phantom Bar where a fantastic buffet meal was provided for all players, partners & family. Many thanks go to Alex from Hotel Dania for the food and thanks to Christian Boysen for sponsoring this very popular event.

“Jumping” Jack Grindvold shot a gross 75 to take out the low gross award and Gerd Riedler was the winner in A Flight with a net 73. In the B Flight it was Dipty Narongsak who was the winner with 37 points, one point ahead of Ed Wyckoff in second place and Larry Gibb was third with 35 points. Steve Newton won the C Flight with 36 points and Bobby Rattanaruangs was second with 34 points and Wan Makmul finished third on 33 points.

Larry Gibb Gets The Chocolates At Navy!

Just a couple of groups were signed up on this occasion and on a bright, sunny day we headed South on Sukhumvit to tackle the Plutaluang Golf Course which is excellent value for money. With the course being fairly busy our golfers were allocated East & North nines in that order and the first group got away pretty well on time at 10.00am. The weather was good, not too hot with a bit of a breeze and the course was reported to be in good shape, particularly the North nine. With no real delays the golfers proceeded at a fairly good pace and the rounds were completed in a little over four hours.

Larry Gibb had 38 points & broke through for his first win with us and veteran Ken Hole came second with 36 points. With three golfers on 33 points a count back was required to determine third spot and it was Thomas Johansson (15 point back nine) who got that honour from Iain Jones (14 point back nine) and Steve Newton (13 point back nine).
