Blacky Takes The Honours On A Low Scoring Day!
It was time to return to the Navy Course and take advantage of the excellent low season rate of 500 baht Green Fee and you can’t beat that for value! We had a good field with a couple of newcomers who slotted in well with our friendly group and as everyone was on time our first group got away a few minutes earlier than our scheduled 10.30am tee time. East & South were the allocated nines to be played and the course was in fine condition although most of the greens were quite slow and took a bit of working out. As they say “same for everyone” but not too many adjusted well enough as there was no-one who got better than 3 shots from their handicap. It was a reasonably quick round with very few delays and most groups finished their rounds in about four hours & fifteen minutes.
Your writer, Peter Blackburn kept up his steady form and managed to win the day with 33 points, 1 point ahead of Dave Palmer in second spot. There was a “log jam” then with four golfers on 31 points so a count back was required which resulted in third place going to Nat Rukkid (17 point back nine) and in fourth place was Ian Pickles (15 point back nine). The unlucky ones were Ken (again) Hole (14 point back nine) and Dick Braimbridge (13 point back nine).
Results:
1st – Peter Blackburn (15) – 33 points
2nd – Dave Palmer (10) – 32 points
3rd – Nat Rukkid (23) – 31 points
4th – Ian Pickles (15) – 31 points

Lehane Wins On Count Back!
We boosted our numbers on this particular Friday at Phoenix by combining with Lou & the Lewinski guys which meant we had just short of 10 groups for the day. We interlinked the groups with one Phantom group and then one Lewinski group and got off the Ocean 1 tee just before our booked time of 11.00am with both Societies running separate competitions. It was hot & humid so plenty of water (or beer for some) was the order of the day and even though many of the greens on the first nine had sand on them the course was quite good. The going was a bit slow but we finished our round in about four hours & twenty minutes.
We had just the one flight on the day with 5 places up for grabs and there were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the par threes & longest first putts on Ocean 9 and Mountain 9. Many thanks to Stephen Newton for contributing to the novelty awards.
There were 2 golfers on 36 points so a count back was needed to sort out the winner and it was Dave Lehane (21 point back nine) who got the honour from Peter Ditz (19 point back nine) in second spot. In third place came your writer, Peter Blackburn with 34 points followed by Larry Gibb in fourth place with 33 points and Wan Makmul once again scored a place on the podium by finishing fifth on 32 points.
Results:
1st – Dave Lehane (20) – 36 points
2nd – Peter Ditz (10) – 36 points
3rd – Peter Blackburn (15) – 34 points
4th – Larry Gibb (20) – 33 points
5th – Wan Makmul (32) – 32 points
