The Growling Swan 12 January

Pattaya CC – January 12th 2015

“Growlers” from The Swan take on Pattaya C.C.

I have to say anticipation was an understatement for this cub reporter, having never played Pattaya C.C. and it was something I was looking forward to.

I found it quite interesting that prior to departure Mark Henkel took the time to tell me as to why he was going to have a bad game.

Wait till you see the scores, amazing.

Twenty seven combatants set out today with the weather looking as if it was going to be on our side. After a short bus trip we arrived to find the old club house still in use, with no date given as to when the new one will be in operation. I have to say we were greeted by the friendliest staff I have ever encountered and nothing was a problem which was very refreshing.

We hit the tee boasting two grades and found the course still a little underdone, with tricky greens, pin placements a bit tough and dry fairways.
Overall if they get things right (and I am sure they are heading in the right direction) with the distance to travel, booking and getting on this course will be harder than picking Saturday night’s Tattslotto numbers.

We welcomed Alan Colonel Sanders, Keith “Kissy” Buchanan, Paul Taylor, Barry Welling, Kevin Townsend, Allan Hanlon and Tom McDowell
Kae and Roy were farewelled as they are off to America. Good luck and please return soon.

There were some good scores, the weather was definitely staying on our side and a comfortable day was had by all.

Competition was tough in the A grade and the winner off his handicap of five with 40 points was Barry Welling. Second on a countback off his handicap of fifteen with 40 points was Keith Buchanan. Third off a handicap of a fourteen with 36 points was Alan Hanlon, whilst fourth on a count back off a handicap of seventeen with 36 points was Fred Cuypers.

B flight was won by Mark Henkel with a great score of 43 points off a handicap of twenty five. I guess the saying “whinge and win” comes into play, well done Mark. Second with a score off 42 points off a handicap of thirty two was Sandy Leiper. Third with 38 points off a handicap of twenty five was Tom Cotton and 4th with 35 points off a handicap of twenty three was our only lady player Rita Zobelli.

COVETED COMPASS CAP
This award is presented to the person with the worst score of the day (which is never revealed) and the winner has the honour of donating fifty baht to Deefa the Dog for charity purposes. The Colonel as many others before, accepted and wore the cap all evening.
Deefa was then let off the chain and ate as has not done for a long while.
