BUNKER BOYS we 27/12

Green Valley G.C. (Stableford)
The popular Green Valley course was busy today and when we arrived on the first tee there were several groups already waiting. The weather was once again bright and cool, so the waiting around wasn’t too unpleasant, with plenty of pre-game banter being exchanged. We eventually managed to tee off almost thirty minutes later than our scheduled time, and the first three holes were played at a snail’s pace, but fortunately the pace of play picked up as the round progressed. The course was in much better condition than on our previous visit a couple of weeks earlier, and the greens were slick and fast, which may account for the lower than usual scores. Colin Greig claimed his second win in successive games with (for him) a modest score of 34 points, ahead of Rab McDonald and Mashi Kaneta who needed a countback to separate them. Geoff Parker claimed fourth place and produced the shot of the day, sinking a putt in excess of 50 feet, uphill with a 3 foot break, on the par four 5th green. Colin’s win put him into the lead in the Golfer of the Month competition with two games remaining, overtaking absentee Gordon Melia who is currently enjoying(?) a wintery Christmas break in the U.K.
1st Colin Greig (hcp. 8) 34 points
2nd Rab McDonald (hcp. 13) 33 points
3rd Mashi Kaneta (hcp. 14) 33 points
4th Geoff Parker (hcp. 14) 32 points
Only 3 near pin prizes were claimed : Colin Greig, John Graham and Mike Corner.

Pattavia Century G.C. (2 man Scramble)
It may have been Christmas day, but here in paradise we’re all born again Buddhists, so there was no reason to forsake a day’s golf just to keep Father Christmas in business, and sixteen players turned up at The Ranch. We did however concede to recognize the day as a fun day, and elected to play a pairs competition in a 2-ball scramble format. We also decided to make a return to the newly renovated Century Chonburi course (now known as Pattavia Century) where most of us haven’t played for a couple of years due to the previously poor condition of what is generally a good layout. The pairs were drawn from the hat, seeding high and low handicappers, and everyone set off to the course in good spirits, and special thanks to Richard and Jack who landed the task of calculating the combined handicaps in the car on the way to the course. We arrived at the clubhouse to find the course was almost deserted and were able to tee off at our leisure on another bright and breezy day. It was immediately obvious that the new owners have done some good work, with new grass on the fairways and the greens running slick and true. With hard ground underneath, there was also plenty of run on the fairways, but the main problem that everyone faced was the extremely tricky greens, where downhill putts were a real test. The round was completed without any holdups, and as one would expect in this format the scoring was very tight. The winners on the day were the pairing of Gerry Cooney and Duncan Lee with a six under par score of nett 66. Everyone celebrated back at The Ranch, devouring the massive Christmas dinner provided by Buff and his staff, to conclude what had been a satisfying and enjoyable Christmas day for everyone involved.
1st Gerry Cooney + Duncan Lee (hcp. 6.6) nett 66
2nd Geoff Williams + Mike Brett (hcp. 7.38) nett 67
3rd Mark Stanley + Skinny Newton (hcp. 9.8) nett 68

Emerald G.C. (Medal)
Our tee time today was an hour later than usual, and when we arrived at the club house it was obvious that the course was very busy when we were informed that there was a shortage of golf carts. We eventually obtained carts for those that needed them, and got away almost on schedule, but for the first few holes the pace of play was painfully slow, culminating in five of our six groups all congregated on the par three, 5th hole. The course has improved significantly over the past few weeks, with most of the previous GUR now playable, but today there was a problem with the sprinkler system so that several fairways had rivers of water running down them. The greens however were at their best, significantly faster than they’ve been in recent memory, producing many complaints when seemingly reasonable putts rolled completely off the putting surface. The final group completed their round as the sun was beginning to set and the drive back to Pattaya was undertaken in the dark, so there were some weary golfers back at the presentation. Mark Stanley and Tony Scambler were playing in the same group and produced the best scores on the day, with Tony’s score of gross 37 on the inward nine, being sufficient to win the day on the countback. Geoff Cox continued to dominate the B flight (he’s now had two wins and a second place in his last three appearances) ahead of Ken Young and the newly arrived Ken Ellmore. A special mention is due for Ian Masterson who secured a near pin prize on the par three 15th hole, which was his first after many appearances over the years with the Bunker Boys. Today was the last opportunity for the remaining couple of contenders to challenge Colin Greig’s lead in the Golfer of the Month competition, but even though Colin didn’t add to his points tally today, neither did any of the contenders, so he’s wrapped up his fifth title of the year, with one game still to play.
