Mountain Shadow G.C. (Stableford)

Twelve golfers today for our visit to Mountain Shadow, and we set off up the 7 motorway on a bright sunny morning. We tee’d off at our leisure and although there was another local society ahead of us, they were far enough ahead that our leading group never caught up with them throughout the round. We welcomed back Alan Freeman who was playing on his birthday and celebrated by taking third place and two near pin prizes. It’s usually the lower handicappers who are successful on this testing course and today was no exception with Colin Greig continuing his run of good form to come in first place ahead of John Graham. Several players commented that the course is beginning to appear a little bit scruffy, and although the recent renovations to the changing rooms are very welcome, it’s to be hoped that it’s not going to be to the detriment of the course, which is one of our most popular venues.

Results :

1st Colin Greig             (hcp.  7) 36 points

2nd John Graham         (hcp.11) 34 points

3rd Alan Freeman         (hcp.  4) 33 points

Near Pins : Colin Greig, Tore Eliassen, and Alan Freeman(2).

Greenwood G.C. (B and C courses) Medal

It was another bright morning as our golfers tee’d off for a medal competition at the popular Greenwood course. The course was quiet and in good condition, but the fairways were still damp and heavy from recent downpours. The round went smoothly for the outward nine, but the clouds were starting to build as we set off on the inward nine, and as the leading group played the 15th hole the heavens opened and a violent thunder storm interrupted the round. After waiting in the shelter for 45 minutes the course was completely flooded and we were reluctantly forced to abandon the competition. The journey back to the clubhouse was tricky with the cart paths flooded almost too deep for a buggy to pass through, and everyone was relieved to finally get back to the clubhouse with the rain still pouring. This was the third time we’ve had to abandon a competition this year, which is just about the average for a complete year’s golf in tropical Thailand.

Pattavia G.C. (Stableford)

When we arrived at the club house it was evident that the course was busy and we soon discovered that two or three other local societies were on the course ahead of us, which is testament to the new found popularity of this vastly improved venue and the good value for money it offers. We tee’d off a few minutes later than scheduled and the round was soon interrupted by another heavy storm as the leading group played the third hole. Fortunately the rain ceased after 30 minutes and we were able to complete the round in increasingly pleasant conditions with the course drying out rapidly. The outward nine had taken almost three hours to complete but the pace of play picked up on the inward nine and we were able to complete the round in reasonable time. The greens here are notoriously difficult, although today they were not running too fast, but still anyone hoping for a good score had to be on their best putting form. Alan Freeman was the only player to play to his handicap on the day taking first place ahead of Peter Habgood and Geoff Hart who were all playing in the same group.

Results :

1st Alan Freeman         (hcp.   4) 36 points

2nd Peter Habgood      (hcp. 19) 32 points

3rd Geoff Hart            (hcp. 24) 30 points

Only 2 near pins were claimed : Alan Freeman and Geoff Parker.
