Bunker Boys we 06/06

Bangphra G.C. (Stableford)
Twelve golfers today for our visit to the monkey course on a bright sunny morning with a gentle breeze keeping temperatures at a reasonable level. When we arrived at the clubhouse it was clear that the course was quiet, and we able to tee off at our leisure, with no groups in sight ahead of us. The fairways were in good shape but the greens are still recovering from recent maintenance and were much slower than one normally expects at this venue. We welcomed back regular visitor Mike Lloyd, and he started the round in spectacular style by blobbing the first three holes, before eventually getting his act together and scoring 20 points on the inward nine to record a respectable score, but not good enough to get into the frame. Top spot was claimed by the always steady Mashi Kaneta, one point clear of Tony Robbins and PJ Redmond made a welcome return to the podium taking third place.
1st Mashi Kaneta (hcp. 14) 33 points
2nd Tony Robbins (hcp. 14) 32 points
3rd PJ Redmond (hcp. 28) 31 points
Only two near pins were claimed: Duncan Lee and Kenny Chung.

Khaow Keow G.C. (A and B courses) Stableford
Although the car park was reasonably busy, it appeared that most other golfers had made an early start, and we were able to make our way at leisure to the first tee. It was soon evident that an early start might have been a good idea, as it was another hot and humid day as our three groups tackled the challenging A and B nines at Khaow Keow. The fairways are currently not in great shape but heavy mowing equipment was in evidence as the round progressed, so hopefully they will be soon much improved. Scoring was particularly difficult as the players sweltered in the conditions and in the end 30 points was sufficient to secure top spot for Tony Robbins, who is currently enjoying a good run of results, beating Gerry Cooney on a countback. Newcomer Steve Wallace took third place and also shared the four near pin prizes with Takeshi Hakosaki.
1st Tony Robbins (hcp. 14) 30 points
2nd Gerry Cooney (hcp. 13) 30 points
3rd Steve Wallace (hcp. 10) 28 points
Near pins : Steve Wallace (2) and Takeshi Hakozaki (2)

Emerald G.C. (Medal) Sponsored by KPK Foods
A good turnout today for our first medal competition of the month with a KPK Foods voucher up for grabs by the winner. Once again the course was quiet and although there’s still a considerable amount of GUR around, the fairways were in reasonable shape and the greens were running true. As the round progressed, the cloud cover increased and with a gentle breeze blowing there was some relief from the oppressive heat endured during recent games. Despite the reasonably pleasant conditions, the scoring on the day was on the low side with no player managing to play to his handicap. Once again Tony Robbins managed to nab first place on a countback ahead of Mike Lloyd, and with two wins and a second place in the first three games of the month, Tony has taken the early lead in the Golfer of the Month competition. Tony’s win came with a generous (?) free drop ruling when his ball was clearly seen to bounce in a bunker on the sixth hole and disappear down an animal’s burrowing hole and despite Tony’s best efforts (including sticking his arm down the hole – rather him than me !!), the ball was not recoverable.
1st Tony Robbins (hcp. 14) nett 74
2nd Mike Lloyd (hcp. 14) nett 74
3rd Mashi Kaneta (hcp. 14) nett 75
Near pins : Steve Durey, Geoff Parker, Mike Lloyd and Mashi Kaneta.
