THE GROWLING SWAN – KEVIN GROSE REMEMBERANCE DAY / STROKE
PATTAVIA GOLF CLUB – THURSDAY 27TH NOV 2014
By: San Mig Stu
SAL BRIZZI TOO GOOD!
Today three buses left the Growling Swan under cloudy skies with all anticipating a cooler November day ahead….this was not the case.
The day’s event was a stroke day being the Monthly Mug Award but more importantly to all the players it was a day to reflect upon a great big hearted bloke who passed away a few years ago whilst visiting his mates and friends here in Pattaya.
This was the second Kevin Grose Memorial Day held for Big Kev and everyone paid their respects before teeing off with a minute silence requested by his best mate here Peter Grey.
This writer was somewhat curtly rebuffed by The Drut for forgetting to remove his cap whilst all had their heads bowed. (I apologies Kev for my unintended disrespect)
As each group teed off it was noted that the majority were already showing signs of major perspiration and whether this was due to the day getting hotter or signs of stress was later to be revealed.
This scribe did not play due to an aggravated elbow injury, however having hired a buggy and driven around watching all his fellow golfers struggle with the conditions, he was not entirely disappointed.
Whilst all players found the going tough probably due to the combination of heat and stroke play stress (None bettered their handicap), I was very impressed with the major improvements to the course and facilities. It had been some 18 months or more since I last played at Pattavia and the positive changes were starkly evident. New concrete paths, sand in good looking bunkers, fairways and tees well groomed, surrounds well maintained, fast and tricky greens not to mention a lovely new club house with a generous food menu….shame about the road in!
It was the tricky greens which tripped up most players and echoes of “If I had only three putted instead of four” reverberated around the locker room after the game…
There were great expectations as a hollering was heard around the course from the group containing Peter Grey’s foursome….Celebrations unfolded in the club house later as it was revealed that Peter did indeed par the par three fourth hole.
Sal Brizzi was the eventual overall winner but he needed a count back to separate him from Don Richardson and Mike Gosden who settled for second and third respectively followed by JJ Harney in fourth place to round out the A Grade lot.
B Grade was narrowly won by Patrick Poussier whilst Sandy Leiper needed a count back to secure second from Roy Dayton and Andrew Allen took out 4th spot.

This award is presented to the person with the worst score of the day (score never revealed) and the winner has the honor of donating 50 baht to Deefa the Dog for charity purposes. Jeff Mellon romped in the award with a score not unlike Australia’s last one day cricket innings and he graciously donated to Deefa the Charity Dog, as did many others, and wore the cap all evening.
