The Golf Club we12/12
The Golf Club write-up for 8th – 12th December
The Wonders of Wangjutra!
Some of the adventurous ones at Wangjuntra’s 1st tee.
Monday 8th – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Bill Eyles (22) 40 points
2nd – Thierry Danzas (21) 39 points
3rd – Kenny Aihara (4) 37 points
4th – Walter Baechli (16) 36 points
4th – Chuck Anderson (10) 36 points
The signup sheet was not full on this day, which seems to happen every year now. For some reason, this first week or two in December is the calm before the storm as the “peak” of the high season rapidly approaches. Our rooms and condos are all full next week but now there are rooms empty and waiting. Our 6 groups of golfers packed up and boarded the bus out to Green Valley as we do every Monday morning. The day was looking beautiful as cooler temperatures are the norm now.
Scoring was very good today as we remember last week’s 3 way winning tie a mere 35 points. Today, that would not have gotten you on the podium as cards of 36 were turned in by Chuck and Walter but only good enough for a fourth place tie. Kenny Aihara has now been cut to just a 4 handicap but that didn’t stop him from shooting to a 37 point round.
Thierry Danzas came good again with an impressive 39 points for sole second. What can we say about Billy? He is certainly now in the depths of his purple patch and continues to turn in some great scorecards. Remember he shared the win here last week and even had a hole in one last month! Nice shootin’ Billy to notch up another win.
Nigel Flanagan, John McHugh, Steve Mulberry. Noy and Dave Mather.
Wednesday 10th – Wangjutra Highland Course – 2-Man Scramble – White tees.
1st – John McHugh & Dave Mather (7.3) net 62.7
2nd – Steve Mulberry & Nigel Flanagan (8.8) net 63.2
3rd – Dave Ferris & Peter Rogers (17.2) net 66.7
4th – Dale Shier & Steve Ellison (10.4) net 67.5
“Brilliant”, “amazing”, “stunning” were the comments on the shuttle bus even before we got to the first tee! This place is no ordinary round of golf, it is a day’s adventure. Practically every hole on this course would make the “Signature Hole” of most other golf courses. It is truly a course you must experience for yourself because the photos even do not do it justice. Please don’t try any other format than a scramble here as it will beat you up and you will hate this golf course. It is a perfect track for a scramble format and that is the way to have loads of fun on this unique layout set around a spectacular mountain backdrop.
There were a load of guys who were playing here for the first time, which I get a real kick out of because it is such a visual feast. This course opens your eyes to a one of a kind design using the natural elevation changes to amuse and confuse.
“Stairway to Heaven” from the green.
Weather was absolutely perfect today and we barely broke into a sweat, except possibly climbing up to the green on “Stairway to Heaven”! The course was in perfect condition but we saw a couple of verticut greens recovering from a few weeks old trim but even they rolled true.
John McHugh and Dave Mather were first-timers out here today and they liked what they saw. These guys are both good golfers that hit the ball a ton (McHugh drove the 18th!) but they didn’t have much of a handicap advantage and they were playing here for the first time. We didn’t give them much of a chance. Unfortunately, they proved us wrong as did our second place finishers Steve Mulberry and Nigel Flanagan. Their fourball kicked butt on the field and walked away on top of the heap. Dave Ferris and Peter Rogers proved that the higher handicappers also had a chance with the dynamic duo of Shier and Ellison claiming fourth.
Friday 12th – Pattaya C.C. – Stableford – White tees
1st – Bryan Carroll (16) 41 points
2nd – Kenny Aihara (4) 35 points
2nd – David Forster (14) 35 points
Please water the back nine! This golf course would be a whole lot better if the greenskeeping staff were allowed to hose down those 9 holes on the back to get them in good condition like the front nine. It is a great layout here and the new clubhouse should be open any day now. Pattaya C.C. has a lot of potential and is almost there, we just want it to be a success the same way Pattavia Century came round so we could enjoy it even more.
The wind was absolutely howling today, at least that was the excuse for all the low scoring. Only one Irishman knew how to play this game and after an early education on the links of Galway, he handled it as good as Darren Clarke would have.
David Forster and Kenny Aihara had a couple of great rounds to score 35 points out there today. It was a real test of golf with that wind and when combined with a dry back nine there was only one golfer to shoot better than their handicap. The winner today was Bryan Carroll, who has been playing very well lately. The Gentleman Golfer from Galway is on a roll and if it weren’t for the arthritis, he would be winning everything! Well played on a tough day mate.
Thanks to all who supported us this week, and keep it in the fairway!
