The Golf Club we 26/12

Monday 22nd – Rayong Green Valley – Stableford – White tees.

1st – Billy Eyles (20) 40 points
2nd – Fred Graham (20) 35 points
T-3rd – Chuck Anderson (10) 34 points
T-3rd – Rich Moore (16) 34 points

It was a day for the 20 handicappers to take charge as a one-two finish left the others in the dust. Rich Moore was in town on a visit and finally brought his game with him! Rich had a great day out there and brought home a scorecard with a respectable 34 points. So did our pal Chuck “Wow” Anderson as the 10 handicapper tied for third with Rich.

But it was Freddie Graham that took sole second place with 35 points. Freddie has had a good run lately (he won at Pleasant Valley 3 weeks back) and finds the podium one more time.

You are all used to seeing his name in these write-ups and Billy Eyles returns to the top spot with a fantastic 40 point round. This is the third time this month that Billy has won at Green Valley! Actually, he tied with Ken and Phil with 35, and the other time he shot 40, but he was playing off a 22. Now that Billy is down to a 20 he is still improving his game and playing some of his best golf. Nice going mate!

Wednesday 24th – Mountain Shadow – Stableford – White tees.
1st – Ken Grimes (19) 33 points
T-2nd – Kenny Aihara (4) 32 points
T-2nd – Chris Smith (1) 32 points

This is one of our most popular golf courses in Pattaya. The sign-up sheet is always full when Mountain Shadow is on the clipboard. The course is known for her fast greens and it is near impossible to play here without a 3-putt green. I would say the 3rd par 5 and the 17th par 3 are 2 of the prettiest and most challenging golf holes in the area, but the course in general is an extremely entertaining, and fair, design.

Ronald Fream designed Mountain Shadow on a former mango plantation. Fream studied turf management at Washington State University but was recruited by Robert Trent Jones and worked for Mr. Jones for 4 years before starting up on his own. The Fream Team has built many courses throughout Asia and he also worked on projects with Peter Thompson and Dennis Wolveridge. The course was formerly known as Natural Park Hills.

Today, we scooted all the way down Sukhumvit to get the ball rolling. The weather was perfect and we went round in just about 4 hours.

It looked like a duel to the death, with 1 handicapper Chris Smith and 4 handicapper Kenny Aihara both at it for some serious golf. With these greens, you never know! Both these guys are obviously great golfers, but a 19 handicapper got the best of them in today’s competition. Ken Grimes showed up with a smile on his face as his 33 points just edged out Chris and Kenny to top the podium and win all those handsome man vouchers. Great golf Khun Ken!

Friday 26th – Pattavia Century – Stableford – White tees.
T-1st – Graham Eldridge (18) 34 points
T-1st – Billy Eyles (20) 34 points
T-1st – Kerry Rothman (15) 34 points
T-2nd – Kenny Aihara (4) 33 points
T-2nd – Tom Breslin (24) 33 points

The Pattavia winners!

A splendid day was on the cards as playing here at Pattavia is considered a real treat. I think we can all agree that those fast greens we played on Wednesday at Mountain Shadow have their equal here at Pattavia. You won’t get away with sloppy putting here, that’s for sure.

Getting ready to play, we asked the universal question: why do they always jam up everybody in the same corner of the locker room? If you are running a golf course and are reading this, please get the locker room attendants to distribute keys to all areas, is that too much to ask?

The course just keeps getting better, and while there were a few patches of dry, general condition was just great. They are still improving areas of the cart paths but that was only a small inconvenience. You can’t deduct any points for a place that is trying to make things better, and walking here totaled 1,050 baht for green fee and caddy fee!

The leaderboard was all bunched up like the morning locker room as we had a 3-way tie for first and 2 lads tied for second. Like on Wednesday, no high Stableford points on the cards today which is to be expected at this tricky test of golf. F.Y.I., don’t order a Singha here as the course is owned by Chang Breweries and a Chang beer at 6% sure gives you more bang for your buck anyway! Thanks to all who joined us this week for more great golf in the Kingdom!
