Derek Phillips Bounces Back

After a mixed bag of results recently Derek made the comment that “ we can still comeback”, and today he did just that with a top score of 37 points to once again wear the Green Jacket.

Twenty six players arrived at Greenwood, many with high expectations after eight scores of better than handicap, and four of those at 40 points plus, playing from the shorter white tees at Khao Kheow in our previous game.

Then, reality set in when it was decided to go from the longer, regular, white tees here, at 6,600 yds, so that forty points was going to be harder to attain.

No problem with the condition of the course, excellent as always, although the greens were a little slower than usual.

However, there were some good scores coming in. Coming in second to Derek was Jim Ferris, who has played very sparingly recently, and played to handicap for his 36 points.

Maurice Roberts was again in the mix by taking third spot with 35 points and Darren Beavers had to beat two others on countback for fourth spot with 33 points.

Mike Tottenham was one of those in the countback but picked up the prize for best back nine, while the best front nine went to Tom Herrington who is now enroute to the USA for a visit.

Near Pins: Andrew Purdie (A flight), Adam Barton (A flight), Paul Chesney (B flight), Tip Briney (B flight).

Winners at Greenwood

1st Place – Derek Phillips (15) – 37 pts

2nd Place –  Jim Ferris (23) – 36 pts

3rd Place –  Maurice Roberts (13) – 35 pts

4th Place –  Darren Beavers (17) – 33 pts c/back

Best Front Nine ( non winners) – Tom Herrington – 18 pts c/back

Best Back Nine ( non winners) –  Mike Tottenham – 17 pts c/back

Chris Barker, a long hitting, twelve handicap and scorer of 41 points at KK, was not happy about playing the longer tees and that, he reasoned, was why he managed a mediocre score. He moaned too much and so was presented the “silly hat”.

Kiearn Maund seemed happy to record a hat trick of “wigs” as he bid us farewell for this trip.

Fine weather, a splendid course, and a nice Sports Day green fee negated any worries about the colour of the tees, for most.
