Mitch Carlon’s Hit and Run
After such a huge day at Phils’ birthday two days earlier, it was a nice restful day at Greenwood when, after two no shows, we started with just twenty six players.
The management at Greenwood, who are always good and helpful, gave us a two tee start which also enabled everyone to finish and be back in town much earlier.
Weather ranged from hot to very hot, cloudy and cooler, to a nice breeze. Three seasons in one day.
The course was in fine condition and did not have the wet patches as per our previous visit. Greens on both nines, B and C, in good shape and ran nicely. Some in our group thought they were not quite right as the area around the holes seemed to make their putt deviate.
Mitchell Carlon’s work takes him offshore for periods of time and a couple of trips to Udon Thani with his lady, has cut down on his number of games of golf.
However, today he came out blasting his 300+ yards off the tee which had Tip Briney in awe. Tip saw them even though he wasn’t in the same group. Good putting helped also, and Mitch won the day and the Green Jacket, his first, in a closely fought three-way countback at the 39 points mark.
Tony Browne has been in good form of late and continued to be right up there, taking second ahead of Tip Briney, a very popular winner. We thought he was inspired by Mitch’s driver, but his driver still doesn’t work.
We went one flight with six places. Darren Beavers had enough “flashes of brilliance” to grab 36 points and fourth place.
The final two places had three players in contention, but one had to miss out.
Andy Kelleher and Phil Mitchell both scored 35 points, with Andy having the better back nine.
1st Place – Mitchell Carlon (11 ) -37 pts c/back
2nd Place – Tony Browne (17) -37 pts c/back
3rd Place – Tip Briney (27) – 37 pts
4th Place – Darren Beavers (17) – 36 pts
5th Place – Andy Kelleher (10) – 35 pts c/back
6th Place – Phil Mitchell (24) – 35 pts
Best Front Nine ( non winners) (B)……Stu Brown ….22 pts
Best Back Nine ( non winners) (C)…….Richard Dobson…18 pts
There was no contest for the “silly hat” as Keith Melbourne had his name on it when, although he was in the second group out, not the last group, proceeded to pick up the near pin markers and walk off with them, until he was pointed to the error of his ways.
Barry Horman didn’t score many and wore the “wig”, but he certainly scored plenty of ladies when a bevvy of beauties showed up at the bar at little later, where went out to greet them.
