Good Guys Do Win

A final low season visit to Green Valley on Wednesday 31st October saw the Pattaya Links Golf Society end the season in style on a course which was quite well presented with good fairways, a little soft but allowing some run and greens which disappointed, being somewhat inconsistent and with a few still bearing signs of re-turfing. Hardly the fare for the onset of the high priced high season rates which apply from the next day.

Eight groups left the tee well before time and the round was played under a cloudless sky with a cool fresh breeze evident all day, making life comfortable for the thirty golfers.

The field was divided into two flights with the cut at eighteen and under and scores were moderate with only a couple of exceptions. In the top flight fourth place went to American golfer ED Wyckoff with 35 points, losing out on countback to Eric Black who posted 35 points on his return.

Second place, again on “cb”, went to Colin Service with 35 points with Colin stumbling through the final couple of holes. The flight winner was Pattaya regular Mashi Kaneta with an excellent 38 points.

In the second flight fourth place went to Jim Ferris, at last seeing light at the end of a seemingly long tunnel, with 30 points, one behind Tip Briney with 31. Second place went to Patrick Poussier with 34 points.

But the plaudits and a second green jacket were reserved for the quiet man of the group Dave Arataki whose 39 points represented one of his better scores with the group. Maybe some work on the bar’s simulator the previous afternoon helped, but whatever the reason it showed that good guys can and do win, sometimes.

The best front nine went to Richard “Banjo” Bannister with 20 points and similarly the best back nine winner was Jim Galendez with 17 points.

Near pins went to Dave Arataki (5), Vic Stanton (8), Patrick Poussier (13) and Tony Browne (16)

In his penultimate round this visit Iain Graigen wore the wig with panache and Steve Potter took the silly hat for his poor nine hole score tally of ten points. As a countback was needed it went no further than the recorder seeing his score on the other nine was the same. A poor start can be understood but repeating the low score on the back was just a tad too extravagant. Well done Steve!

Thus ended another low season at the Links and it was rewarding to see how much the golfers had enjoyed the challenges on offer. And with the humidity falling the signs are good!
