Pat Lavin Fights Back
During this low season, the price on offer at St. Andrews 2000 is too hard for the Links golfers to resist, and so it is added to the monthly schedule. Get it while we can.
With the help of good rains and a lot of work from the Greenkeeper and staff, the course is in very good condition. Some weeks ago the greens were being worked on and were not very good, but reports today said all were very happy with the roll and, apart from the first hole, which seemed a bit slow, all had a nice puttable speed.
The fairways on the opening nine were somewhat damp and the caddies kept carts on the path, but the back nine was dryer and firmer and carts did venture onto the fairways.
This day we had, after one withdrawl (staying up late to watch the British Open) and one no show, 16 competition players and one non combatant.
Pat Lavin is an old friend of Phil’s and played his first game with us last week. Much to the joy of his playing group that day, he was soundly beaten.
But Pat fought back at St. Andrews, recording a resounding victory. His 38 point haul easily had him on the top of the podium.
Nearest rivals, Graeme Dunn and Mike Jeffreys went to a countback to separate their 33 point totals, with Graeme getting the nod.
We went to a fourth place and that honour, with a score of 32 points went to Geoff Wallace.
But wait! Still more winners..
Best front nine ( non winners)….Greg Proctor ( 18 pts)
Best back nine ( non winners)….Kevin Rogers (17 pts)
Winner …….Pat Lavin (10)…………..38 pts
2nd Place……Graeme Dunn ( 22)……..33 pts c/back
3rd Place……Mike Jeffreys (20)……….33 pts
4th Place……Geoff Wallace (14)………32 pts
We welcomed two first time visitors, Victor Wright and Paul ( fresh off the plane from Hanoi, where he works)
A tasty curry for the golfers complimentary meal was followed by Phil’s Light hearted presentations. Donning the Green Jacket for the first time, Pat felt very comfortable.
Then the fun started, as there were no less than 4 candidates for the “Wig”. We had to go to a countback to decide the “ very” worst score of the day. As Phil moved among the crowd trying each for size, Bob Watson quickly came to realize it was going to end up on his head. A handicap 8 golfer, with 15 points on the front nine, and can still win the “Wig”…( and he had a birdie on the back nine!!!).
The rain did arrive in Pattaya after everyone had left for home, or wherever ??
