Links Golf Society 22/2
Gordon Good for Green
Local golfers could be forgiven for thinking the main golfing occasion at the end of this week was at Siam Old Course where the LPGA was holding its annual Honda event but wiser heads knew it was the Pattaya Links Golf Society’s trip to neighbouring Pattaya CC on Friday, 22nd February which held all the thrills.
The course was dry but the greens were consistent and a strong breeze either helped or hindered shots but certainly made the day more comfortable. A field of twenty-nine golfers turned up and with the cut at sixteen and under play in two flights got under way before the allotted time slot.
The top flight saw an extremely tight contest with three golfers sharing the top score of 35 points. Countback placed American Mike Ehlert in third place behind compatriot Kevin LaBar leaving Andy Kelleher as the winner with the day’s second best gross score of 82.
In the second flight Sweden’s Eddie Runfors took third place with 34 points, one behind Alan Walker’s solid 35 points and the only sub par golfer Gordon Laviolette on 38 points, which was good enough for the Green Jacket back at the Links.
Near pins went to Steve Truelove (5), Masa Takano (7), Gordon Laviolette (12) and Frank Jelmo (16). The consolation best front nine award was won by Gordon Nelson with 17 points with the best back nine award going to Darren Beavers with 19 points.

Golfers who struggled were relieved when the wig was awarded to Richard Dobson, who stepped down from a motorcycle taxi at the Links as his name was announced – the timing of the man is impeccable – and the “silly hat” award went to John Harrison whose back nine score of seven points belied his handicap of 12.
Galleries may well have been smaller than just down the road but the excitement was no less intense as the Links ended its current golf week with three enjoyable and skilful days of the game we all love.
