Sharp Cuts Pattaya Down to Size
On Friday, 21st June The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Pattaya Country Club to play a stableford competition in two flights, cut at seventeen and under.
A few scattered clouds scudded across the sky on a hot day which saw the return of some old friends, notably Dave Arataki, making a return after five months out recuperating from some serious medical issues.
The course was full as the group started on the tenth with dry fairways and consistent greens, which were just a tad slow. Good progress was made however.
The second flight saw France’s Serge Straeten mark his return with a third place finish of 34 points, only one behind the consistent Irishman Donal McGuigan on 35. The flight winner was Tip Briney with another very solid round of 38 points. His secret? Leave the woods at home, trust the irons and hit the greens!
In the top flight third place went to Adam Barton on countback with 34 points, one point adrift of runner-up Colm O’Donovan who was resurgent following the “wig” award last time out.
The flight winner was American Mark Sharp whose 41 points marked his best round with the group as he blunted the opposition in an otherwise tight flight.
Near pins went to Petur Petursson (5), Bill Stewart (7), Kym Richardson (12) and Derek Phillips (16).
Best nine consolation awards went to Warren Gallop whose 21 points then saw him retire sick before starting the back nine, which was won by Kevin LaBar with 29 points.
“A” Flight (0-17)
1st Place – Mark Sharp (15) – 41 pts
2nd Place – Colm O’Donovan (17) – 35 pts
3rd Place – Adam Barton (17) – 34 pts c/back
“B” Flight (18+)
1st Place – Tip Briney (28) – 38 pts
2nd Place – Donal McGuigan (19) – 35 pts
3rd Place – Serge Straeten ( 24) – 34 pts
Once again the “silly hat” went to a golfer who had not signed up for the day, Kevin McEntee, and serves as a friendly reminder that places are in great demand with the group and someone, someday, will be hugely disappointed with no name on the start list.
The “wig” was worn by Stu Brown who has enjoyed the ultimate highs and inevitable lows this trip.
It may have been the traditional longest day of the year but it was nevertheless enjoyable at Pattaya CC.
