                Black Brightens a Dull Day

The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Eastern Star on Wednesday, 15th November, to play a stableford event on the course which was in good condition but with soft fairways and slower greens than expected.

The day was exceptionally humid and, apart from adding two clubs to most shots, made the course long and challenging. Five groups took to the tee and only the final two groups were drenched by the storm which had threatened all day.

Scoring was difficult and fourth place was held by Mike Firkin with 31 points, one behind Phil Davies and Paul Chesney, when Paul took second on countback. The winner was Eric Black, featuring for the first time with the group, with an excellent level par 36 points.

Consolation prizes went to John Mason (best front nine, 17 points) and Ken Page (best back nine, 17 points) whilst Mike Wilsher, unusually struggling all day with his short game looked at home in the loser’s wig.

Mike Firkin kindly sponsored near pins but only one was recorded, Peter Ditz on the seventeenth. It was another indication of how tough it was to find the distances in the conditions.

However, the course was good and certainly deserves more visits when, hopefully skies are clear and the sun shines. In more ways than one this had been a “black” day.
