Quality Again from Smith

The Pattaya Links Golf Society took the short trip to Burapha on Wednesday,14th August to play a stableford competition on the tasty A and B nines. Sadly the “taste” was a little soured by rain-restricted maintenance, leaving the rough tough and tangled and greens with a higher cut than usual, bringing “grain” into the equation with most putts.

The field of twenty-six golfers was divided into two flights at fifteen and under and play got underway before time.

In the second flight Greg Proctor again made the frame, his 34 points giving him third place. In second place was Walter Baechli with 35 points. The flight winner was Dane Niels-Peter Kristensen with a steady level par 36 points.

The top flight saw Paul Lanzetta score 36 points to take third place, just one point behind the top two, Paul Smith and Glen Elsworth on 37 points.

Countback decided in favour of Paul but his absence from the presentation gave PLGS debutant, Glen, the chance to wear the Green Jacket after his first round with the group.

Near pins went to Phil Davies (B3), Paul Smith (B8) and Paul Durkan (A3 and A6).

Consolation prizes went to Wayne Peppernell for his best front nine score of twenty points and Dave Hewson for his back nine of 20 points, on countback from Len Jones and John Pierrel.

“A” Flight (0-15)

1st  Place – Paul Smith (3 ) -37 pts c/back

2nd Place – Glen Elsworth (12) -37 pts

3rd Place – Paul Lanzetta (8) – 36 pts

“B” Flight (16+)

1st  Place – Niels-Peter Kristensen (19) – 36 pts

2nd Place – Walter Baechli (19) – 35 pts

3rd Place – Greg Proctor (20) – 34 pts

Whilst we saw one newbie at the top of the leaderboard we saw the other newbie at the nether end and Murphy Sagai’s almost semi respectable 26 points was decided as the lowest of the three scores of 26 points and he qualified for the “wig”.

Paul Chesney wore the “silly hat” for his low nine hole score but in mitigation he could claim distraction with the onerous duty of organising an imminent end-of-season PLGS tour.

It had been a day when the course may have disappointed but Paul Smith emphasized his quality with a round of 74 gross at Burapha.
