Greenwood is Putty in Briney’s Hands
Having savoured some fine golf at Laem Chabang two days previously the PLGS stalwarts enjoyed a visit to the equally well-presented course at Greenwood on Wednesday, 10th July. The popular group, augmented by three new golfers and three returnees were assigned the long and testing C nine with the more relaxing B nine for the in run. Fairways were clean and the greens were again very consistent.
The field was divided into two flights, cut at fourteen and under and play got underway before time, with an empty track after the group. In the top flight Hawaiian golfer Mike Ominya made an impact on his debut with the PLGS winning a countback for third place with 34 points.
A countback was also needed to decide the flight honours with Kevin McEntee losing the recorder’s eye and taking second place with 37 points, leaving Tommy Marshall in first place with 37 points and a better back nine.
In the second flight Len Jones found some form at last to take third place with 34 points, following Derek Phillips in second with 37 points.
The honours, and Green Jacket, went to the group’s most photographed golfer, Tip Briney. Tip usually makes the photo-op sometime in the golfing week, and not always for the best reasons but today his roller coaster golf found a new level as he finally discarded his four iron in favour of his driver and proceeded to decimate the course with 42 points.
Greenwood might well have been putty in his hands as everything he asked for in his game came good. Say “cheese” Tip!
Near pin prizes went to Dave Buchanan (2), Paul Smith and John Pierrel and the consolation best front nine was recorded by Bill Copeland (18) with Wayne Peppernell taking the back nine award with 18 points on countback.

The “silly’ headwear went to Darren Beavers for his front nine score of eight points, whilst another debutant, Sean from Japan, was presented with the “wig” for his low total score. However, so many times the hirsute honour encourages better things. Just ask Tip Briney
