Barry Wellings Shows Them How
Laem Chabang Golf Club has wasted no time in re-introducing the great Monday Sports Day Special of 2059 bht all in, and Links golfers have wasted no time in signing up to get there.
Forty six players comprised the final starting line-up and the first group hit off right on our allotted tee time of 10.00 am. under warm, slightly overcast conditions.
Last week we missed one complete round and the game was called off at the half-way on another day, so this made for the extremely unusual occurrence of twice in a week due to rain and storms, so would we complete the round today? It looked promising.
It was decided to play just two flights with six places in each, plus best nines and near pins.
The course played long today, even off the white tees, and many found it tough going with some lowly scores after the A nine, and the C nine considered much more challenging.
The greens were a little slower than usual but some took advantage of that.
Having many low and very low handicappers, the cut was 0-14 and 15 up.
We hadn’t seen him for a while but Barry Wellings announced his return by firing the best score of the day, by far, with a card reading 41 points from his 5 h/cap (72 gross) and thoroughly deserved the chance to don the Green Jacket.
Newcomer Derek Hutch held out Les Cobban on countback at 37 points, then came Paul Durkan with 35 points, Paul Smith on 34 points and another newby, Richard Fearby won a four-way countback on 34 points for sixth place.
On previous visits, Niels-Peter Kristensen was a “wig” wearer more than once, but this time around he is showing some very good form and ran away with first place, scoring 38 points.
Donal McGuigan just returned to Pattaya and, although a fair way behind the winner, was happy to take second spot with 33 points. John Chelo has shown some consistency recently and took third with 32 points. Then Tony Browne was shaking his head to be handed fourth prize with only 31 points to beat Bobby Lloyd on countback, in Bobby’s finale this trip.
Bringing up the final spot was Darren Beavers on 30 points.

On Friday, Bart Bingham returned to Links to find his clubs did not return.. After frantic phone calls, it appears he did the inexcusable by letting his caddie take the bag to the bus.
An alert bus driver from another Society noticed a strange bag in his bus, unloaded it and handed it to Pattana Staff.
After a unanimous vote it was decided that Bart was silly enough for the “hat”
There were four contenders for the “wig” and Masa Sugaya “won” on countback.
From Bart and Links Golf, thank you to that bus driver and to Pattana Staff who took care of the bag.
Oh! how was the weather? It did rain and stopped play for 20 to 30 minutes at about half-way. However, play did continue and everybody had an excellent day out.
