Growling Swan 20/07

Despite the overnight and continuing wet weather a dozen golfers showed up to take on the Big Navy’s North and West courses.

Mr. (seriously hung over) Steven Younger, who retired at 2 o’clock in the morning following cessation of his late night frivolities where he abstained from drinking any Sangsom (fortunately for all in his company as it’s his fighting rum!), electing instead to partake in way to many Jack Daniels, was very quiet on the bus ride to the course. He only stirred to open the window beside him and have a large expectoration!

Stu Rifkin, feeling sorry for Steve, generously offered him one of his ice cold San Miguel beers, as a hair of the old dog, which immediately caused the window to open again and dry reaching could be heard!

With the weather forecast to clear, we teed off slightly earlier than our booking time, under cloudy skies and cool conditions which continued throughout the day.

There was hardly any carry on the fairways so we elected to use the social players yellow tees, which proved appropriate as only a few players beat their handicap.

Considering recent rains the course was in good nick with the greens running true.

The shorter play coupled with the physically induced relaxing state that Steve Younger found himself in, produced a fantastic round of golf and one of his “best scores in Thailand”, he was later heard to remark.

With 44 points off his 14 handicap he blitzed the field and won the day easily. Alex Field (18) and Stu Rifkin (14), both playing in the group with today’s winner, tried in vain to capture the mystique that had a hold of Steve and accordingly partook in many of the very affordable chilled Leo beers available at all drink stops, however they could only manage a creditable 37 points apiece. This was enough for Alex to take out second spot on the day and Stuart coming in third using the count back method.

Fourth position was filled by Takeshi Hakozaki who played to his handicap of 11.

1ST – STEVE YOUNGER (14) 44 points

2ND – ALEX FIELD (18) 37 points

3RD – STUART RIFKIN (14) 37 points

4TH – TAKESHI HAKOZAKI (11) 36 points

Long first putts went to IAN WARD on N9 and ALEX FIELD on W9.

Back at the Growling Swan our host Peter Grey had a lovely chicken and vegetable rice dish ready for any hungry player wishing to eat and all who partook agreed it was very tasty. Thank you Peter and staff!

Peter Grey also made welcomes to Aldy Todd and Frank Mills and bade farewells to Harry Wszola, Dave Fletcher and Sean Millar was made welcome, visiting from Brisbane, Australia.

Deefa was again the recipient of grateful donations from most patrons and players and a special thank you to Dave Fletcher and Ian Ward for donating their prize money today! All these donations ultimately go toward bulk purchases to Thai orphaned kiddies or upgrades to their facilities/schools here in Pattaya.

For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.
