Mr. 44, Dave Ferris

Some days, this is a magnificent game. All seems to go just where you expect it and for a brief, fleeting time you are the King of the World. The planets are in alignment, the universe is yours, and you can do no wrong.

On some days, you own the course, and such was the day for Dave Ferris. Dave made no mistakes and his card of 44 points was testimony to that. Mr. Ferris also collected the near pin on the last par-3, the 16th hole. One of those days!

Sorry Mark, great round with 40 points and Fred Birch had a respectable 37 as both those numbers could have been a winner on another day. We were all glad to see Mr. Nice Guy take all the handsome man vouchers from Capt. Phil today. Nice shootin’ Dave!

Tuesday 24th – Phoenix – Stableford – White Tees

1st – Steve Crocker (12) 40 points

2nd – Dave Ferris (22) 44 points

T-3rd – Kenny Aihara (5) 36 points

T-3rd – Danny Willett (13) 36 points

T-3rd – Rick Harris (9) 36 points

The Mountain and The Lake courses were on today’s schedule and for many of us it would be the first time to play the new Lake nine. General condition on the Mountain was very good but a bit shabby on the Lake. That is to be expected with such a recent completion, but having been open for several months it needs attention on the sidelines.

Steve Crocker in control, with Danny, Dave, Fred and Kenny

The most controversial hole (and rightly so) I that skinny par-5 (the fifth I think) with water on the right and trouble on the left makes for a poorly redesigned change. This was a terrific Dennis Griffiths track (as well as Soi Dao and the Thai Country Club) and why someone would want to change it so drastically is beyond me. I am all for grass improvements, new sand, more fauna and flora, bouldering or whatever, but as we say back in the States, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Let’s face it, we are amateur, holiday golfers they are catering to for 99% of the rounds played there.

Steve Crocker (yes, white wine Darren’s brother) was in top form today and a terrific 40 points did the job for first place honours. Here he is again, after that 44 on Monday, Dave Ferris continues his purple patch with an impressive 38 on the card. A trio of good golfers found Kenny Aihara, Rick Harris and Danny Willett (no, not that one) stymied at 36 to finish off the podium.

Thursday 26th – Greenwood – Stableford – Yellow Tees

T-1st – Ian Brimble (6) 39 points

T-1st – Kenny Aihara (5) 39 points

T -3rd – Jimmy Brackett (7) 37 points

T -3rd – Phil Smedley (16) 37 points

Nobody minds the extra 15 minutes it takes to get here, as once you get out on the course the quality is apparent. This is also one of the best deals going as a 400 baht green fee shows the management at Greenwood has a realistic price set. Remember, this course had the same design team as Rayong Green Valley, Dennis Wolveridge & Peter Thompson, but at half the price. There are 27 holes to this layout and each of the three nines has a personality all its own.

Today we saw both Ian Brimble and Jimmy Brackett score very well as they wind down their respective “Tour of Duty” in Pattaya. Brackett’s 37 found him tied for third while Ian ended in a tie with Kenny Aihara for the win. Captain Phil even had a good round and his shocking 16 handicap earned him 37 points like Jimmy. The last par-3 near pin was won by non-other than Jimmy Brackett also! Thanks for joining us Ian and have a good trip back to Texas. Hopefully Jimmy got through those TSA problems for a smooth trip home to Arizona as well!

Thanks guys for another great week of golf in the Kingdom!
