The Golf Club 15/9
TGC write up for 11th – 15th Sept.
Monday 11th – Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees
1st – Mark Wood (11) 39 points
T-2nd – Aki Yamamoto (19) 36 points
T-2nd – Kevin Woods (20) 36 points
For whatever reason, the traffic was very calm today and our little Monday excursion to the Barcelona Valley complex was a seamless 30 minutes in the van. Khun Dave Ferris is the D.O.G. all this week and with this lot, he has his hands full.
Green Valley is back in the great shape is used to be. The recent rains have improved the turf considerably and the fairways are pretty much patch free these days. The greens were outstanding. If you had seen this course two months ago, you would be amazed, but things grow quickly in Thailand!
A decent comp of 16 today with some familiar names back in town and regular visitors also returning. Overcast skies made for a comfortable round of golf. Owen Lloyd joined us today and claimed our Caddy Smile near pin.
Aki Yamamoto (our April MM winner) is back and the leaderboard sees him sandwiched between a Wood and a Woods. Aki-san and Kevin the latter shared second spot with 36 on the card. Our buddy Markie is back and in top form after a month back home in Scotland for his first win in warmer climes. Golf is so much easier without that 40 mph breeze.
Tuesday 12th – Treasure Hill – Stableford – Yellow Tees
1st – Jimmy Brackett (6) 31 points
2nd – David Outhred (15) 29 points
3rd – Richard Cawthorne (9) 28 points
Only a couple of fourballs out there today as last nights’ rain may have kept some of the lads under the covers. Never mind, off we went for another adventure smackin’ that little white ball around the jungle. Treasure Hill is a bitch of a track. It’s a Tom Jones kind of golf course, and blobbing the first two holes here is not unusual.
We did manage to have a special (no extra charge) entertainer in the van as Jimmy Brackett was in fine early morning form and had them rolling in the aisles. They should have had their seatbelts on. Thanks for that buddy, but it was no help in the scoring.
It was another overcast day, but more humid than before and when you combine a wet course with a 6,470 yard tee box, the points are hard to come by.
Richard Cawthorne plays off 9 but could only gather 28 points today. David Outhred had one better for sole second at 29. Winner winner chicken dinner goes to Jimmy “The Entertainer” Brackett who shot 31 out there for best in show. Heck, he would have done it even without the extra “stroke for slope”. Did you guys even pass the hat around for Jim?
Thursday 14th – Pattana B & C – Stableford – Yellow Tees
1st – Kevin Woods (19) 36 points
2nd – Jimmy Brackett (6) 32 points
3rd – David Outhred (16) 31 points
Next stop on this week’s tour, the very impressive Pattana Sport Club just off the 331 highway. This is one of Pattaya’s top golf courses and features 27 holes of pure joy. We played under clear skies, for a change, with a few puffy white clouds that made for a picture postcard (remember those?) setting.
Scoring was modest for a 6,374 yard track with only one golfer matching his handicap. The usual suspects were in the line-up.
Dave Outhred took third with 31, The Entertainer walks away with second and 32 on the card whilst Kevin Woods ruled the roost with 36 for the outright win. Oh, and young Kev also managed our Caddy Smile near pin on the 2nd for a nice little Brucie Bonus!
Friday 15th – Silky Oaks – Stableford – White Tees
1st – Charles Murray (4) 40 points
2nd – Alex Tregurtha (18) 34 points
3rd – Barry Tregurtha (19) 33 points
The Book is back! Just when you thought it was safe, Barry, son Alex and Charles roll into town and shares in “i-Bar” jump like a North Korean rocket. Good to see our old mates back again but we never expected them to populate the entire leaderboard, greedy buggers!
Like everywhere these days, the course was wet underfoot, but we were lucky with a nice breeze and slight overcast to make the day a good one.
I had the good fortune of partnering with Charles on a Mulberry Ryder Cup to Chiang Mai a few years back, but he did not with me. Charles is a strong player and I am not surprised at all that he took the win here today. Alex beat dad, but Big Daddy Baz got third (and the last laugh) as his near pin put him good for even more bitcoins!
