THE EXHAUSTING BEACH FUN RUN
You could be forgiven for thinking that Pattaya, amongst other activities, is the sporting capital of Thailand. Apart from the more serious regular sports like golf, pool, darts, there are a number of communal sports open to the public, the bed race, cross bay swim, beach football, cycling, marathons, all supported enthusiastically, and now the beach fun run competing for HRH Princess Soamsavali Cup.
On 15th June, 850 competitors started on the beach at soi 6 and 2 kilometres further along, crossed the finishing line very near Walking Street. Although most competitors were children, fit enough to carry out this mission, some more mature individuals, older enough to know better, also took part but confessing, in a state of near collapse but with a smile on their faces, that they did not realise how hard it was to run on sand.
But it was all in a good cause. Proceeds were going to YWCA who, together with the help of City Hall, organised the event for the benefit of local children’s and ladies charities. Khun Praichit Jelapai (Khun Moy), president of YWCA, was astonished but delighted at the response to this challenge.
A shirt, food and refreshments were included with the registration fee as was the entertainment, prizes and lucky draw in the evening. Deputy Mayor Khun Ronakit Ekasingh was there to present some prizes which were sponsored by many groups which included City Hall, Pattaya Sports Club, Jesters and Rotary. The entertainment went down very well and so preparations will start shortly for next year’s event. Everybody agreed, this was a truly fun day.
