Table Tennis Tournament
TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Promoting sport is another string to the bow of Pattaya Sports Club. Every year we sponsor sporting activities for Thai children to provide them with an opportunity to excel, in their chosen sport, on the national or international stage. Recent activities include:
Badminton. We have been supporting the National Badminton Championships for many years and it is a pleasure to note that the ladies world champion, the ladies junior No.1, the men’s junior No.2 are Thai as are a number of players, both male and female, in the world top 20 all have come through the National Championships.
Golf Caddie Scheme. The finals took place recently and, although it is early days yet, many of the golfers had swings to die for and have the potential to advance beyond the shores of Thailand.
Table Tennis A tournament that is still in its infancy but PSC have supported this competition for the last 2 years and it is becoming very popular for there were entries from all over Thailand. It was unfortunate that this year, the numbers were lower due to the problems of transport in the flooded areas but 450 children under the age of 18 turned up at school No. 7 to enter. Many members of the Thai junior national teams were there and the standard, particularly in the latter stages was astonishing.
The Mayor, Khun Ittiphol Khunplume, braved torrential rain on Friday to open the event. Thais like to show how talented they can be which was well demonstrated by 2 gymnastic teams who showed the audience the extraordinary flexibility of these Thai children and to end the opening party, a boy’s band played some well-known tunes.
Pattaya Sports Club are a major sponsor of this event and a team representing PSC won the team event for the second year running helped by Khun Duck, 14 years old Thai Junior International, who obviously has a big future ahead of him not only winning his division but going on to beat all comers. The PSC team also won the doubles and other members were well placed in their divisions.
One particular moment to remember was the performance of a 9 year old young lady, hardly tall enough to see over the table, holding her own with children a year or two older than herself to win a trophy for being in the top three in her division.
