SPECIAL OLYMPICS WITH PSC SUPPORT
A TRULY SPECIAL EVENT SUPPORTED BY PATTAYA SPORTS CLUB
There are more than 4.2 million athletes taking part in nearly 200 countries throughout the world culminating in a bi-annual sporting event featuring 7500 athletes and is now the biggest single sporting event in the world.
No, not the Olympic games but the Special Olympics which is an event for children with intellectual difficulties. Founded by a member of the Kennedy family in the USA, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, she realised that very little was being offered to help children with special needs with nowhere to play or kick a football. Consequently, she started a summer camp in her area, the first one in her own back garden. It was so successful that in 1968 she arranged the first Special Olympics, for about 1,000 athletes, and has now been adopted by nearly 200 countries. The bi-annual games alternate and there are 32 disciplines in the summer games and 8 in the winter games.
Thailand is one of those countries and each of the four regions of Thailand hold an annual event and recently held these special games for the 8th year in Pattaya and featured 380 children with special needs. Some of the winners from Thailand are then invited to the next summer games to be held in Los Angeles in 2015.
Pattaya Sports Club, Jesters and YWCA are major sponsors of the Special Olympics and the overriding factor is the commitment and determination of the athletes to finish the race regardless how far they are behind the eventual winner and the smile on their faces when they have crossed the line is a joy to behold. Those that are a little slower than others in the race are encouraged and urged on by relatives and passionate volunteers to complete the course.. Every child receives a token of their efforts in the race.
If all the golfers in Pattaya had this determination, we would all be off single figures.
