Traffic Snarls – Rain – Still Watson Wins

A mixed day out to Greenwood for 19 golfers today.

Our two bus loads were becalmed as we made the exit ramp from the Motorway heading for the Rayong 36. Road works had caused 6 lanes of traffic to try to get into one lane. This resulted in barely moving for more than 30 minutes. As if the trip to Greenwood is not long enough!

Phil, Maurice and Bob, in the car, had spotted the problem and went a different route, arriving at the course in less than an hour.

Finally breaking clear we made good time and actually arrived right on the 10.00 am start time. Phil had informed the Marshals, who were very good, and told us we can go as soon as we were ready.

Playing the B+C nines, we had no hold ups, apart from the rain, and made good time.

Looking at the skies, my playing partner, Frank, asked how many holes can we do before it rains. He didn’t have to wait long for the answer as, after 3 holes, a heavy, but brief, shower caused us to head for shelter.

Meanwhile in the lead group Bobby Watson and Maurice Roberts were doing what they have been doing for many games recently, and that is notching up big scores.

Greenwood Course is usually quite soft underfoot at this time of the year, so after some rain the night before, it was carts on path only and lift, clean and place. The brief shower didn’t make the going any easier.

The greens are in very good condition, albeit a little slow because of the dampness.

We decided on two flights today, and as mentioned, it was that man Bobby Watson, who once again scorched around the track for 39 points off his reduced handicap of 6. ( that’s net 75).How does he do it?

Maurice Roberts put in another consistent effort to bag 35 points to take second spot in “A” flight on a countback from newcomer to Links, Terry Drier.

“B” flight saw the seemingly evergreen Len Jones take the prized first place with a handicap equalling 36 points,  a full 5 points clear  of Frank Riley on 31 points and Phil McClure a further 2 points back on 29 pts.

Then there was the Best Nines.

Best Front Nine (non winners)…..John Anderson……18 pts c/back

Best Back Nine ( non winners)…..Kevin Rogers………19 pts

Winner…”A” flight………Bob Watson (6)…………39 pts

2nd Place…………………..Maurice Roberts (11)…..35pts c/back

3rd Place ………………….Terry Drier (15)…………35 pts

Winner…”B” flight………Len Jones (28)…………..36 pts

2nd Place…………………..Frank Riley (22)…………31 pts

3rd Place…………………..Phil McClure (21)……….29 pts

An easy drive back to Pattaya, with no more  rain..  but time was marching on, so into the sorting of results over a tasty Curry and  Rice  for the Players.

Due to the late start, and finish,, some had drifted away before presentations, including the two  most worthy of wearing the “Wig”. So it stays in the box.

Bob, however was all too keen to get that Green Jacket wrapped around him.

Even with the frustration in the morning, the day, of course, was another day in golfing paradise.
