KENNY CHUNG ONLY GOLFER TO BEAT HANDICAP AT PATTAYA CC

Cafe Kronborg played at Pattaya Country Club on Monday 29th January. The course was in its usual condition, but with a few greens poorer than normal. Pin placements were slightly friendlier than of late. We noticed that Pattaya CC had reduced the size of some of its greens, a growing trend of courses in the area. Ironically this actually makes it easier, as pin placements can no longer be near the bunkers. Pattaya CC is a popular course and is always busy, unsurprisingly some of the small greens were absolutely covered in repaired pitch marks. It makes you wonder how these small greens will fair in the long term, with it being impossible to place pins so that highly used areas have time to recover.

The journey was less than 30 minutes, but there was a 10 minute delay to our scheduled tee time, due to early morning fog. We still managed to get finished without getting any significant amounts of rain, even though the clouds were building up and looked very threatening. It is quite unbelievable that we are talking about rain and fog on the golf course at this time of year!

The cards showed that the course had proven to be a stern test with only one person beating their handicap and only two more playing to theirs.

There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 22 and the B flight 23 and above. There were 6 people on a 23 handicap at the split line, resulting in the flights being unbalanced. There were 13 players in the A flight and 18 in the B flight, with 4 places in the A flight and 5 places in the B flight.

The A Flight winner was Brian Gabe with a solid 36 points, Brian continuing his hot run, apparently due to a Korean golf video which has added yards to his drive. Second was Jon Dean with a very respectable 35 points, joining us for the first time in many years. Third was the consistent Peter Bygballe with 34 points. Third place was decided on countback with 2 players on 33 points, the 4th place spoils were taken by Kenneth Madson with 15 points on the last 9, Ty Anderson losing out with only 12 points on the back 9.

In B Flight Kenny Chung was the winner with an excellent 37 points and the score of the day. Karen Brown came second with a sterling 36 points, continuing her improving game. Third was Torben Sorensen with 35 points, no write up would be complete without a mention of Torben. Fourth was Graham Buckingham with 34 points, despite his growing list of ailments. Fifth place predictably was decided on countback with 3 players having 33 points. John Ostrom came out on top with 11 points on the last 6, beating Jan Lovgreen’s 9 points on the last 6 and Gordon Clegg’s 12 points on the back nine.
